From tax office to luxury hotel, Germany’s first Fraser Suites hotel has quite a history
In downtown Hamburg, the first Fraser Suites in Germany recently opened its doors.
The hotel is set in the building formerly occupied by the regional tax office. After extensive renovations with the guidance of JOI-Design the historic structure can now begin its new life as a luxury hotel.
A homage to the 1920s
When you enter the lobby of the Fraser Suites Hamburg, you immediately plunge into another world.
The two-story entrance hall captivates the eye with the generous use of valuable materials. Fine ornaments on the ceiling and delicate Art-Deco patterns on the floor create an atmosphere of light-heartedness reminiscent of the 1920s.
From the entrance, the view sweeps through the old double doors towards a cosy lounge and the restaurant’s warm light. Here guests can linger in elegant Art Deco furniture with a backdrop of tropical palm tree motifs while indulging in delicious treats.
The colour scheme consists of various blues, reflecting Hamburg’s location along one of Germany’s most important waterways. Brown tones complement the blues and create an atmosphere of calm and relaxation in the rooms and public areas.
The combination of 1920s heritage and modern design continues: in an oval-shaped room, formerly the library of the tax authorities, old wooden display cases are complemented by light, filigree furniture in fresh turquoise, blue and grey tones and an artistic rug.
The guest immediately feels disconnected from the hustle and bustle of downtown Hamburg and comes to rest in this stylish and sophisticated atmosphere. Seating recessed into the shelves provides extra comfort and privacy.
Each room is unique
The Fraser Suites in Hamburg has 154 apartments in seven room categories, most of which come with a kitchenette, making them attractive for long-term stays for business travellers and families.
What makes this property so special though, is that almost all rooms have a unique floor plan. While some have high ceilings, others are duplex suites or look out over the water.
These differences inspired the design team to choose furnishings which remind guests of typical Hamburg apartment buildings and style elements like the slightly higher ‘Hamburg baseboard’.
The coffered wall panels with their rounded corners once again add a modern twist and balance historical design and modern interiors.
At the Fraser Suites Hamburg, guests are offered characterful and stylistically independent rooms which remain intriguing even during longer stays.
Work or relax
For a few quiet moments after a stroll through the city, guests can enjoy the cosy library with casually mixed furniture and a fireplace.
The adjoining Writing Room offers a chance to double down on work and clear out a full inbox. Here, strong sapphire blue paired with lighter elements creates a serene atmosphere perfect for concentrating on important tasks or relaxing with a good book.
One floor above, three conference rooms offer a place for meetings and informal gatherings. In the former boardroom, the original 1950s furniture has been completely restored and creates a unique space.
Of course, in addition to all the meeting and work opportunities, relaxation should not be neglected. In the hotel’s basement, two saunas and a fitness room provide the chance to decompress and unwind.
All in all, Fraser Suites Hamburg brings a new and unique concept to Hamburg which will not only attract travellers but also locals seeking to escape everyday life for a short while and indulge in life’s luxuries.
