February 2022 overview: China pips US as world’s busiest hotel market [infographic]

Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo
Both countries are awaiting 26 major openings, according to the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database, although the People’s Republic will gain far more rooms overall.
This month’s scheduled completions are dominated by two hotel development heavyweights, China and the US.
China and the US battle it out for supremacy
Our dedicated researchers have identified 185 projects with 37,406 rooms that are due to go live in February 2022. The biggest contributor on a country-by-country basis is China (26 properties, 6,880 keys), just ahead of the US (also 26 hotels, but with just 4,766 rooms), while third place goes to the UAE (nine schemes, 2,284 keys).
If we turn our attention to the regional breakdown, APAC wins again, courtesy of its tally of 59 projects with 12,431 rooms. Europe (44 schemes, 7,541 keys), North America (40 properties, 7,687 rooms) and the Middle East (27 developments, 7,181 keys) are also proving to be very active, with things looking considerably quieter in Africa (11 schemes, 1,932 keys) and Latin America (four properties, 634 rooms).
Nearly two-thirds of all the openings we’re tracking involve the four-star sector, incidentally. A total of 115 four-star projects with 21,862 rooms are due to launch this month, compared to 70 five-star schemes accounting for 15,544 keys.
High-profile hotel openings worth following closely
One of February 2022’s most exciting debuts, Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo will boast more than 150 rooms including 63 suites and private residences on a secluded peninsula overlooking the Pacific in the Mexican state of Jalisco. This development, part of the 2,100-acre El Tamarindo master-planned scheme, is to incorporate four F&B venues, three infinity pools and an oceanfront David Fleming-designed links golf course. Other prominent design specialists working on bringing this spectacular project to life include Legorreta, Taller de Arquitectura and B-Huber.
Another newbuild worth highlighting is the much-anticipated Hard Rock Hotel Budapest, a 136-room property with a convenient location in the heart of Hungary’s capital. Among the facilities on offer will be an upscale restaurant, Sessions, and a signature coffeeshop and bar, Constant Grind. Studio’100 Architects is handling the architectural design, with Lázaro Rosa-Violán Studio focusing on the interiors.
Many TOPHOTELNEWS articles draw on exclusive information from the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database. This subscription-based product includes details of thousands of hotel projects around the world, along with the key decision-makers behind them. Please note, our data may differ from records held by other organisations. Generally, the database focuses on four- and five-star schemes of significant scale; tracks projects in either the vision, pre-planning, planning, under-construction, pre-opening or newly opened phase; and covers newbuilds, extensions, refurbishments and conversions.
