Fairmont Golden Prague: Brutalist heritage reimagined

Across 320 rooms and public spaces, LAUFEN solutions complement a carefully restored dialogue between Czech design and contemporary hospitality.

Fairmont Golden Prague brings a landmark of Czech modernism into a new era of hospitality. Following an extensive transformation, the hotel reopened in April 2025, preserving the architectural and artistic character of the original 1970s building while introducing contemporary interiors, new amenities and a renewed relationship with the city.

A modernist landmark renewed

Originally designed by Karel Filsak with Karel Bubeníček and Jaroslav Švec, the former InterContinental opened in 1974 as one of Prague’s defining examples of Brutalist architecture. Conceived as a Gesamtkunstwerk, the building brought architecture together with works by leading Czechoslovak artists, including glass pieces by René Roubíček and ceramic elements by Zbyněk Sekal.

The renovation, led by Marek Tichý of TaK Architects, sought to recover this original identity while adapting the hotel to contemporary hospitality. Original artistic elements were carefully restored, while Richmond International developed the interiors for the renewed hotel.

Today, the building sits between Prague’s Old Town and the Vltava River, with views towards the city’s historic skyline. Its 370 rooms, including 50 suites, are complemented by restaurants and bars, a spa, fitness facilities and an indoor and outdoor pool.

LAUFEN across rooms and public spaces

The bathrooms continue the dialogue between the building’s modernist heritage and its contemporary interiors. In the guestrooms, LAUFEN Living washbasins introduce clean geometry and subtly modelled transitions, integrated into generous surfaces that provide space for everyday comfort.

In premium rooms, CLEANET NAVIA shower toilets bring technology discreetly into the bathroom. With the technical components concealed within the ceramic body, their appearance remains deliberately restrained, combining personal hygiene and comfort without interrupting the clarity of the interior. LAUFEN LIS concealed installation systems and minimalist flush plates further support this visually calm approach.

Wellbeing through CLEANET NAVIA

CLEANET NAVIA shower toilets introduce another dimension to the bathroom experience, bringing washing and WC functions together within a discreet ceramic form. Their inclusion reflects the attention given not only to the visual language of the renewed interiors, but also to hygiene, comfort and everyday wellbeing.

Across a project of this scale, the different solutions demonstrate how a coordinated bathroom portfolio can respond to the requirements of guestrooms, suites, accessible bathrooms and shared facilities while maintaining consistency throughout the building.

Designed for different demands

In the hotel’s public areas, the bathroom specification responds to a broader understanding of comfort, considering the different needs of those who use the space. LAUFEN PRO LIBERTY solutions support accessible bathroom design through carefully considered dimensions and ergonomic features, helping to create environments that are easier and more comfortable to use for people with reduced mobility.

This attention to accessibility sits alongside the requirements of high traffic hospitality spaces. LAUFEN PRO WCs and ANTERO urinals complement the specification, combining durability, ease of maintenance and reliable performance across restaurants, wellness areas and the hotel’s ballroom.

Preserving identity while looking forward

Fairmont Golden Prague is ultimately a project about continuity. Rather than replacing the identity of the original building, the transformation brings its architecture, artworks and craftsmanship back into focus while adapting them to a new chapter.

Within this setting, LAUFEN contributes bathroom solutions that combine design, technology and functionality across different areas of the hotel, becoming part of a broader transformation in which heritage and contemporary hospitality coexist.
