Designed by Fettle and inspired by the Deutscher Werkbund movement, the stylish new Schwan Locke is the lifestyle aparthotel brand’s first property in mainland Europe.

This launch underlines the rapid expansion of a brand that has succeeded in establishing itself as a leader in hybrid hospitality.

A neighbourhood lifestyle hub

Schwan Locke places guests just a short walk from the Theresienwiese, where Oktoberfest is held, in the city’s Glockenbachviertel district. The property stays true to Locke’s signature home-meets-hotel concept, with accommodation and social areas that are designed to be lived in.

“Schwan Locke marks the first of two Locke openings in Munich and it is a particularly exciting start for all of us. Like other Locke locations in the UK and Ireland, we have gone to great lengths to create a space that is deeply rooted in the neighbourhood – where both locals and visitors can feel at home,” said Eric Jafari, chief development officer and creative director for Locke.

“Achieving this was a significant creative challenge, but also a unique opportunity. Munich is steeped in a rich and diverse history, while also being home to a unique creative landscape. We wanted to celebrate this – paying homage to the city’s past, but working with disruptive, forward-thinking partners to bring our vision to life.”

Locke is continuing its reputation for disruptive food and drink collaborations by partnering with the founders of Michelin-star restaurant Mural on new concept Bambule!, comprising a coffee shop and chic wine and cocktail bar with a menu of charcuterie, oysters and locally sourced small plates.

“We are thrilled to partner with Locke and launch Bambule! in the brand’s first opening in Munich,” said Moritz Meyn, founder of Mural. “After a challenging year for hospitality, it feels like the right time to open an original new venture that will bring a unique food and drink concept to the Theresienwiese neighbourhood. We’re excited for Bambule! to pre-empt our opening in WunderLocke later this year, with our farm-to-table concept Mural Farmhouse.”

Locally inspired art and interior design

Suiting leisure and business travellers on both short and long stays, this property comprises 151 studio apartments and a complimentary co-working space, as well as a gym, coffee shop, retail space, craft cocktail bar and leafy courtyard.

Each design-led studio apartment comes with ample space, home to a fully equipped kitchen, living areas and dining space. The premium Ludwig Suite also has a six-person dining table, custom cocktail bar and terrace with views over Munich.

Interior architecture firm Fettle drew inspiration from the early-20th-century Deutscher Werkbund for its design, which pays homage to a movement known for combining traditional crafts with industrial mass production in the belief that applied art can improve quality of life. Reflecting this philosophy, the hotel is distinguished by custom-made furniture representative of that time and a mid-century-inspired colour palette of muted reds, greens, yellows and blues.

The design concept is then reinforced by an art collection honouring some of the pioneering women involved in the Werkbund movement, along with the work of local artists.
