Want to start the year with the necessary skills to succeed as a hotel manager in 2020? Veteran hospitality blogger and educator Stephen Sawyers outline the values employees need to run a successful hotel.

Consciously or subconsciously, there are principles that employers look for when hiring hotel workers, supervisors and managers and, therefore, these are characteristics that you should attempt to cultivate and then exhibit and highlight.

A strong work ethic

Hotel employers value employees who possess a willingness to work hard. Doing more than is expected on the job is a good way to show management that you have this.

Dependability and responsibility

Hotel employers value employees who come to work on time, are there when they are supposed to be, and are responsible for their actions and behaviour.

Positive attitude and adaptability

Hotel employers seek employees who are enthusiastic and create an environment of goodwill and who provide a positive role model for others wherever they work. Also, adaptable employees that maintain flexibility in completing tasks and are available to change without complaining when changes are made is critical in the hotel workplace.

Honesty and integrity

Hotel employers value employees who maintain a sense of honesty and integrity. Good relationships are built when hoteliers know that they can trust what you say and what you do.

Self-motivation and loyalty

Hotel employers look for employees who require little supervision and direction to get their work done in a timely and professional manner whilst working in a supportive work environment. They value employees they can trust and who exhibit their loyalty to the hotel. What loyalty actually means in today’s workforce will differ in different zones around the world?

Motivated to grow & learn

They seek employees who are interested in keeping up with new developments and knowledge in the field of hospitality and with their own speciality. Also, self-confidence has been recognized as the key ingredient between someone who is successful and someone who is not. A self-confident person is someone who inspires others.

Professionalism

Employees who always exhibit professional behaviours are highly valued. Professional behaviours include taking pride in their appearance. Professionals complete high-quality work. Developing these ideals and incorporating them into ones’ character can lead to increased job security since they are the mark of a valuable employee who is worth keeping and investing in.
