Set to be operated by Bricks Group, the 154-room Courtyard by Marriott Cornbrook Manchester will form part of a newbuild scheme that also includes an 88-key aparthotel.
Fresh details have emerged about Courtyard by Marriott’s plans to enter one of the UK’s largest cities.
Marriott makes Manchester move
Marriott International and Bricks Group will bring the Courtyard brand to Manchester in 2024, TOPHOTELNEWS can reveal. A reserved matters planning application has been lodged with the council for a Leach Rhodes Walker-designed scheme to create a 15-storey, 154-bed hotel and a neighbouring 11-storey, 88-bed aparthotel on the former Mancunian Springs industrial site next to the Cornbrook Metrolink station, Cornbrook Road and Chester Road.
The hotel element, which is earmarked for Courtyard, will feature a reception, a gym, a dining area and conference facilities. And the aparthotel component – whose occupier is not yet known – will include a reception, gym and conference facilities, plus its own dedicated entrance.
The applicants are Bricks Cornbrook Propco and Peel L and P Developments.
Courtyard coming to Cornbrook
The 154-bed hotel will be called Courtyard by Marriott Cornbrook Manchester.
“Marriott International is delighted to be working with Bricks Group to bring the Courtyard by Marriott brand to Manchester,” said a Marriott International spokesman. “The hotel, which will be operated by Bricks Group, is slated to open in 2024, marking the debut of the Courtyard brand in the city.
“The hotel will be the sixth property in Manchester operating under a Marriott brand – joining AC Hotel Manchester City Centre, Manchester Marriott Victoria & Albert Hotel, AC Hotel Manchester Salford Quays, Manchester Airport Marriott Hotel and Moxy Manchester City (due to open later this year).”
A major mixed-use project
This reserved matters application follows on from an earlier proposal, seeking full permission to construct 280 apartments across two buildings and outline consent for an adjacent 154-bed hotel and 88-bed aparthotel, which secured the green light in July 2018. The £70m residential scheme, associated with property developer Glenbrook and branded as Vox, completed in early 2021.
Leach Rhodes Walker (hotel and masterplan architect), Sheppard Robson (residential architect) and How Planning (planning consultant) all contributed to the mixed-use project.
“The vision for the hotel and aparthotel is to create a landmark gateway building on the main arterial route from the south into Manchester,” said an accompanying design and access statement prepared by Leach Rhodes Walker and Sheppard Robson. “The simplicity of the building design will form a key marker on the southern entrance to the city of Manchester.”
