Dovetail + Co reveals plans to transform Honolulu hotel

Dovetail + Co, founded by a former member of Sydell Group’s senior leadership team, has outlined plans to renovate and rebrand its newly acquired hotel in Honolulu.

The planned transformation of Waikiki Sand Villa Hotel into a Wayfinder property should help Dovetail + Co make a splash in Hawaii.

Shaking up Honolulu’s hospitality scene

Dovetail + Co, led by founder and CEO Phil Hospod, formerly vice president of development at Sydell Group, has signified its move into Hawaii with the purchase of Waikiki Sand Villa Hotel in Honolulu. The property is located along the Ala Wai Canal, close to Waikiki Beach, and will now be repositioned as part of the company’s Wayfinder Hotels brand.

Wayfinder Waikiki will open following a renovation of the hotel’s 228 guestrooms, 70 ft saltwater lagoon pool, and multiple restaurants and bars. The new-look scheme aims to reflect the brand’s ethos of creating energetic lifestyle hubs that celebrate the culture and beauty of their locale.

A Springboard to success

Renovations will be led by Dovetail + Co, with Springboard Hospitality overseeing daily management and operations.

“At Dovetail + Co, we’re big believers in travel’s ability to inspire, transform and connect people,” said Hospod. “We have an important opportunity to be a part of the tourism industry’s rebound during this historic time.

“Travellers are hungry for exciting yet approachable lifestyle hotels that help them dig deeper into the destinations they’re visiting. Everyone knows that Waikiki has a famous beach and Diamond Head is undoubtedly special.

“However, there is so much more to discover. Whether it’s food, fitness, fashion or something else, Wayfinder Waikiki will help our guests find Oahu’s unique take.”

Dovetail + Co spreads its wings

The vibrant neighbourhood of Waikiki is celebrated for its surf beach, designer stores and nightlife. As such, the setting looks ideal for the next outpost of the Wayfinder Hotels brand, which launched in Newport, Rhode Island in May 2020 and celebrates that city’s sea, sand and surf lifestyle.

Dovetail + Co’s growing portfolio of diverse properties also includes the March 2020-opened Urban Cowboy Lodge in the Catskill Mountains of New York State. A 180-room luxury capsule hotel on New York City’s historic Bowery is currently under development too.
