Don’t forget the fun factor in design: Felicia Ng [Video]
While goals are important, taking a step back from time to time to enjoy the journey is key to making the most of design and the hospitality industry, IHG’s Felicia Ng says
TOPHOTELNEWS asks hotel industry leaders to share with us the biggest mistake of their career. They reveal how they overcame the challenge, lessons they learned, and what advice they’d have for younger professionals.
We speak to Felicia Ng, Senior Manager, Design, InterContinental Hotels Group, at the TOPHOTELWORLDTOUR Singapore 2018 at Sofitel Singapore City Centre.
On what she considers her biggest “career mistake”
Ng: I wouldn’t call it a mistake. I would say it’s a misjudgment. A lot of us, when we first start out, get too focused on targets, or KPIs, and opening hotels. You forget to take a break, you forget to have fun, you forget to enjoy the processes.
What I do involves design, and design is creative – and design is fun. You forget to really enjoy all that, and you just get so stuck meeting targets and meeting deadlines that you just get so trapped in there that you lose out on the fun bits of what you’re trying to do.
Advice to younger hospitality professionals
Ng: My advice would be to take a step back. Look at things through fresh eyes and just enjoy the journey. There’s so much to learn, there’s so much to see — just take it all in, enjoy the process. Put the targets aside for a while. Obviously, there are goals to be had, but also look at the ways of getting there, and make it a fun thing.
Make it something that can be learned and that can be enjoyed so that it’s not so much of a process but it’s more of a journey.
