What is modular design? Depending on the field, a module (from the latin modulus) can mean different things.

Design à la mode

If we focus on geometry and design, it refers to a unit of measurement that repeats and combines itself to assemble different structures or architectural volumes.

A well-known example of this is the measurements of the Japanese tatami, habitually used as a unit of measurement repeated in the whole design project.

Today, we’ve selected five projects that present modular relations amongst the parts of the design. Even though we can’t go there in person and measure everything with a ruler, if you pay enough attention, the modules are there – can you find them?

From a room based on the measurements of the tatami to a whole hotel built in cubic modules to preserve an unexpected find of ruins, all of these designs present exceptional taste and sophistication.
