C+W O’Brien Architects led the architectural design of this Dublin hotel and O’Donnell O’Neill Architects designed the hotel’s interiors.

Heritage meets contemporary design

Last year, lifestyle hospitality brand Locke of edyn group opened its first home-meets-hotel property outside the UK with the launch of Zanzibar Locke in Dublin.

Overlooking Ha’penny Bridge and the River Liffey, this new property places guests on Ormond Quay within Dublin’s city centre.

The property draws on the heritage of the Georgian building and former Zanzibar Nightclub it occupies. The site was restored and developed by Dublin-based interior design studio O’Donnell O’Neill Design and C+W O’Brien Architects.

By working with local contractors, joiners and artists, O’Donnell O’Neill succeeded in retaining the original character of the building and fusing that character with stylish modern design featuring the contemporary fittings and custom furniture the Locke brand has become recognised for.

Designed for guests and locals

Altogether, Zanzibar Locke is home to 160 studio apartments along with a gym and the dining venue BARAZA, which is operated by NolaClan, on the mezzanine floor offering coffee and light bites in the morning before becoming a lively restaurant serving small plates and craft cocktails each evening.

Locke specialises in catering for the hybrid travel concept combining the space and comfort of home with the experience and design of a boutique hotel. Each studio apartment here is equipped with a fully fitted kitchen and living space.

Building an environment that’s embedded in the social fabric of its neighbourhood, the brand has worked with an array of Irish partners and suppliers to curate everything from the property’s interiors to its music playlists.
