For our latest TOPHOTELDESIGN exclusive, we look at a stylish 160-studio aparthotel in northern England, which was created to satisfy the needs of contemporary travellers.
This creative scheme successfully marries old and new to spectacular effect.
Heritage and modern design
Whitworth Locke, which opened in 2018, showcases the architectural and interior design of Grzywinski+Pons. It spans no fewer than three cotton export mills, including one in the Scottish baronial style that’s grade II-listed and dates back to 1880.
This 160-studio aparthotel is centred around an impressive glass atrium. Among the property’s many highlights are a restaurant, a third-wave coffeehouse, a crossfit gym, a cocktail bar, a florist, a coworking lounge and multiple meeting spaces.
Space to work, rest and socialise
The interiors throughout pair a blush colour palette with opulent textiles. Shades of sage, taupe, apricot and terracotta are complemented with dark tones to create a luxurious aesthetic.
The property’s studios are all designed for space and comfort, with the aim of making each space feel like an aspirational second home, complete with bespoke bathrooms and fully fitted kitchens.

Many TOPHOTELNEWS articles draw on exclusive information from the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database. This subscription-based product includes details of thousands of hotel projects around the world, along with the key decision-makers behind them. Please note, our data may differ from records held by other organisations. Generally, the database focuses on four- and five-star schemes of significant scale; tracks projects in either the vision, pre-planning, planning, under-construction, pre-opening or newly opened phase; and covers newbuilds, extensions, refurbishments and conversions.
