A stunning Autograph Collection hotel brought to life by an exceptional design team, The Dixon is the focus for our latest TOPHOTELDESIGN exclusive.

This impressive hotel, part of Marriott International’s Autograph Collection brand, has certainly got plenty of Londoners talking.

A creative lifestyle hub

Completed in 2019, The Dixon invites guests to the heart of London’s Tower Bridge neighbourhood on Tooley Street. More than just a hotel, it serves as a new cultural lifestyle hub within an established creative area boasting high-profile attractions like Shakespeare’s Globe and Tate Modern.

The property fits Autograph Collection’s philosophy of providing dynamic places to stay that champion key values like vision, design and craft. Paying homage to its past, The Dixon is named after the architect John Dixon Butler who originally constructed the grade II-listed building as a magistrates’ court and police station in 1905.

Consarc Design Group and Dexter Moren Associates worked on the scheme’s architecture, while Twenty2Degrees handled the interiors. Chelsom provided the stylish lighting.

Heritage and the arts

The hotel houses 193 rooms, including ten spacious suites, which aim to redefine the concept of the traditional boutique hotel by incorporating local culture into the design. Throughout the property, interiors pay homage to the heritage of this landmark building, with original elements now sitting harmoniously within a modern aesthetic.

Curated artwork is displayed throughout the guest rooms and public areas, alongside unique design features like a finely crafted chandelier made of glass handcuffs hanging above the staircase.

In terms of F&B, The Courtroom Bar is an artisan cocktail venue backed by Edwardian oak panelling, and the Provisioners restaurant takes its cue from modern design movements and European café culture while also retaining elements of the courthouse. Interestingly, Provisioners’ Bauhaus- and mid-century-inspired space showcases the work of British industrial designer Sir Kenneth Grange, which is featured by permission.

Overall, the project team has succeeded in creating a neighbourhood feel at the heart of the UK’s bustling capital, simultaneously celebrating the area’s creativity and linking back to its storied past.
