Our latest TOPHOTELDESIGN exclusive focuses on the 2020-opened nhow Amsterdam RAI, which features three huge triangular structures celebrating the city’s multicultural spirit.

A landmark property with unforgettable architecture, nhow Amsterdam RAI is already turning plenty of heads in the Netherlands’ largest city.

A significant achievement

February 2020 saw the opening of this nhow hotel that cleverly brings together cutting-edge design, contemporary art and fine dining.

Reinier de Graaf, partner in charge at Dutch architectural firm OMA, conceived the distinctive design of the building, which is made up of three overlapping triangular sections stacked on top of each other. Each structure points in a different direction, neatly encapsulating the multiculturalism that embodies Amsterdam’s past, present and future.

Rising 24 storeys and 91 metres high, this towering structure houses 650 rooms in total. As the name suggests, it’s located next to RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre, just ten minutes by subway from the city centre.

Globally inspired interiors

The property’s interiors, by MVSA Architects and GLG Architects, draw on the hotel’s ‘cultural hub’ theme with a bold mix of light, colours and patterns alongside cultural symbols from across the world, such as Indian mandalas, Japanese cherry blossoms and Mexican skulls. Its stylish flooring, meanwhile, comes courtesy of Tarkett.

Each one of the 650 rooms is designed according to the direction it faces, whether that’s to the north, north-east, east, south, south-west or south-east.

The newbuild hotel is designed to appeal to both international guests and locals, whether travelling for business or leisure purposes. Its top-floor food offering, spearheaded by The Entourage Group, commands impressive views over the city, while there are also nine 23rd-floor meeting rooms with capacity for 145 attendees.

Please note, our data may differ from records held by other organisations. Generally, the database focuses on four- and five-star schemes of significant scale; tracks projects in either the vision, pre-planning, planning, under-construction, pre-opening or newly opened phase; and covers newbuilds, extensions, refurbishments and conversions.
