The recently opened Mamaka by Ovolo in Bali, a stylish 191-key urban resort brought to life by ARA Design, is the focus of our latest TOPHOTELDESIGN exclusive.

Ovolo Group’s first property in Indonesia, Mamaka by Ovolo is the result of a major rebrand and refurbishment of the former Citadines Kuta Beach Bali.

A milestone property for Ovolo

Contributing to the expansion of Ovolo’s contemporary hotel collection, Mamaka by Ovolo, which is the group’s first hotel outside Australia and Hong Kong, brings the design-led hospitality concept to the beachfront of rejuvenated Kuta. This follows Ovolo’s 2019 acquisition of Citadines Kuta Beach Bali and March 2020 announcement that it would be transformed into an urban resort.

The reimagined property opened at the start of 2021 with 191 designer rooms and suites, new drinking and dining concepts, and an array of other experiences.

Dynamic Bali-inspired design

Envisioned by Ovolo and realised by ARA Design, the scheme employs a playful aesthetic throughout. The hotel fuses the brand’s ethos of vibrant dynamic spaces with inspiration taken from Balinese culture – the name Mamaka, for example, refers to ‘one who shows affection not only for oneʼs self’ in the ancient Pali language.

Reflecting its culturally rich location, the design integrates the colours, weaving, natural materials and patterns seen throughout Bali, with lantern-effect lighting for ambiance. Furnishings from the previous rooms, meanwhile, were donated to non-profit charitable foundation Yayasan Solemen Indonesia.

This newly designed property now boasts a dynamic culinary offering, not least the vibrant beachfront bar and kitchen Street 32 and a rooftop pool club with views over Bali’s western beaches. Also included is a fresh take on a wellness centre, complete with a horizontal climbing wall and circuit training mechanical surfboard, a unisex salon and even an in-house surf school.
