Our latest TOPHOTELDESIGN exclusive looks inside a 2020-completed boutique hotel inspired by the golden age of Victorian industrialism in the Mile High City.

A boutique hotel with a strong design philosophy, Life House Lower Highlands has certainly won plenty of admirers in Colorado and beyond.

Drawing on the local area

Conceived as a ‘Victorian industrialist frontier boutique hotel’, Life House Lower Highlands places guests in the LoHi neighbourhood of Denver, known for its cocktail bars, craft beer specialists and varied dining scene. The district’s first hotel showcases an aesthetic inspired by the surrounding landscape, as well as the Victorian industrialism design movement that once defined the area.

Inside, the hotel pairs House of Hackney floral fabrics with a contemporary industrial structure. Dusty greys sit alongside shades of mustard, red and blue, while leather details reference the Colorado landscape.

The stylish newbuild’s architecture and interiors are the work of Life House Design Studio.

Heritage and landscape

The hotel’s guestrooms range from luxury bunk chambers to spacious king suites. Interestingly, the custom bunks come with full-size beds, bathrooms, a custom dressing bench and flex wardrobe – a world away from the cramped dormitories of old.

Life House Lower Highlands is also home to restaurant, café and cocktail bar Wildflower, which boasts spacious ground-floor space and an outdoor patio. This establishment, highlighting locally sourced produce, pays homage to the neighbourhood’s Italian and Mexican roots, and desserts are presented on a Victorian-style trolley.

During their stay, guests can sample craft coffee, cocktails and baked goods at the hotel living room’s café, or indulge in the main dining room, distinguished by ebonised walnut and brass panelling and a hand-illustrated wall covering portraying the western landscape.
