A TOPHOTELDESIGN exclusive, we delve inside this stylish hotel on the famed Avenue de Champs-Élysées in the French capital, which opened to the public earlier this year.

This welcoming hotel within a refurbished 1970s office building in central Paris illustrates how outstanding design can reinvent an existing property.

A prime location

CitizenM bolstered its footprint in September 2021 with the launch of the Dutch hospitality company’s fourth Parisian scheme, a 151-room property on the city’s iconic Avenue de Champs-Élysées. On opening, it became the 15th CitizenM hotel in Europe and 23rd globally.

CitizenM has stayed true to its philosophy of providing affordable luxury in a well-connected locale throughout. By staying here, between the Arc de Triomphe and Place de la Concorde, guests have easy access to an array of restaurants and boutiques, as well as two metro stations.

This property is the result of a two-year conversion of an existing 1970s office building fronting Rue la Boétie into a modern hotel featuring architectural design by AREP and interiors courtesy of Concrete.

Owing to its location, around a quarter of the rooms on the front façade come with a view of Rue la Boétie and Avenue de Champs-Élysées. The remainder are arranged in a U-shape around a courtyard filled with greenery and outdoor seating.

Contemporary design and abundant art

Guests access their rooms through a design-led living room, passing a wall mural created by French artist Steven Burke (known as Lucky Left Hand) along the way.

The living room features Golden Age wallpaper by Ai Wei Wei, a collection of colourful Vitra sofas and chairs, and artworks such as Andy Warhol’s ‘Flowers’. A number of handpicked artworks are from the CitizenM collection, owned by the company’s executive chairman Rattan Chadha.

Designed for both work and relaxation, this living room’s filled with books and interesting objects, and features a 24/7 kitchen known as CanteenM, offering locally sourced food and drinks including craft cocktails and coffee. The bustling dining area then unfurls onto the inner courtyard.

The hotel has a total of three outdoor spaces: the ground-level courtyard, the CanteenM terrace and the casual, park-style CloudM rooftop bar with views of the Eiffel Tower.

Meanwhile, its guestrooms incorporate appealing amenities like an XL king-size bed, jungle-like shower and entertainment, with many in-room functions controlled by the CitizenM App or MoodPad tablet. Artworks by three French artists – Marie Guillard, Elvire Caillon and Melodie Bachet – curated in collaboration with creative agency Starter add pleasing finishing touches to the accommodation.
