In a TOPHOTELDESIGN exclusive, we highlight the locally inspired contemporary design flourishes evident throughout Germany’s first Andaz-branded hotel.
The impressive Andaz Munich Schwabinger Tor takes its cue from the unique appeal of the Bavarian capital.
Embracing local culture
The February 2019-completed Andaz Munich Schwabinger Tor fits in with the Andaz brand’s philosophy of celebrating local culture and fully immersing guests into each destination. Here, guests are introduced to the Bavarian way of life in a contemporary setting within the Schwabing district, a cultural hub packed with restaurants, theatres and Munich’s largest park, Englischer Garten.
Representing this vibrant area with real flair, the hotel welcomes travellers, as well as Munich residents, who are interested in local street art and urban design.
Bavarian influence
From its stone and herringbone floors to its luminous diamond-patterned ceilings, copper accents and leather sofas, the hotel reflects Munich’s distinct design style. Moreover, a video installation by the artist Yves Petzner features in the lobby, and the hotel’s meeting space integrates a nature-inspired wall of hanging plants in a nod to the celebrated park that this area is known for.
The hotel’s 227 loft-inspired guestrooms and suites exhibit the designers’ contemporary interpretation of Bavarian traditions, with unique furnishings such as custom sofas reminiscent of vintage car seats.
In terms of F&B, Bavarian restaurant The Lonely Broccoli comes with a central open kitchen accompanied by two chef’s tables, while M’Uniqo provides unrivalled views as one of the highest rooftop bars in the city. And the Bavarian feel of the Andaz Lounge is heightened by the inclusion of a cast bronze alloy ‘golden pretzel’ seat made by a Munich art foundry.
Exceptional spa and events facilities
The sprawling Andaz Spa integrates a spiral staircase connecting the spa to the swimming pool from where, on a clear day, guests can see as far as the Alps.
As much as 21,530 sq ft of events space completes the hotel’s extensive offering, with seven studios, two private kitchens, an exhibition space and a ballroom to choose between. Each space reflects the surroundings, with hanging plants inspired by Englischer Garten.
Andaz Munich Schwabinger Tor’s architecture was overseen by Hilmer Sattler Architekten and HPP Architekten, with interiors by Concrete. The drapery hardware supplier was Forest Group.
