For our latest TOPHOTELDESIGN exclusive, we look inside the Plato-inspired Académia in the Greek capital, which showcases the work of MTArchitects and HOK.
This stylish hotel project, which completed in 2019, highlights the achievements of Ancient Greece.
Celebrating history through modern design
Designed with Greek philosopher Plato in mind, Académia fuses a celebration of this city’s heritage with a bold and modern exterior, and interiors incorporating visual cues from Plato’s Three Orders: science, philosophy and the arts.
MTArchitects was behind the architectural design for this scheme, encompassing 66 guestrooms and suites across seven floors, along with the ground-floor Plato Bar & Lounge, a mezzanine restaurant, an indoor spa and pool and a rooftop restaurant with views of the Acropolis. The luxury urban property lies at the heart of Athens, within the city’s most prestigious shopping district and amid its many historic landmarks, contributing to the area’s architectural evolution.
Académia’s outstanding interiors
HOK – New York led the design of the modern hotel’s interiors, taking cues from its landmark namesake, as well as the vibrant culture of contemporary Athens. The firm also paid tribute to the Three Orders by referencing the sciences in the lobby and common areas, philosophy in the guestrooms and the arts in amenity spaces.
Guests can expect stylish interiors distinguished by a colour palette of dark green, black and gold, paired with the use of stone, brass, wood and leather. And reflecting the inspiration that HOK took from philosophy for the accommodation, guestrooms feature brass light fittings and tufted upholstered furniture reminiscent of a private library, accompanied by a curated collection of books.
This Autograph Collection-branded hotel was developed by YHE Hotel Establishment in partnership with Marriott International.
