Country overview: Turkey to see close to 4,000 new hotel rooms in 2020 [Infographic]

According to TOPHOTELCONSTRUCTION, Turkey’s hotel market is set to grow rapidly in 2020.

Turkey’s hotel market celebrates strong growth in 2020 with 24 hotel launches and close to 4,000 new rooms set to hit the market this year.

With Turkey’s popularity as a tourist destination rising steadily, it’s hardly a surprise that the country’s hotel market is growing.

We find out more about the top upcoming openings and who the major players are in the country’s hotel market.

Big plans for 2020

According to the TOPHOTELCONSTRUCTION database, a total of 43 hotel projects with 7,804 rooms are planned in Turkey over the coming years. 24 of them are slated to open in 2020 and will add 3,894 rooms to the market.

In 2021 and 2022 growth will slow down to only 4 and 5 new hotel launches respectively. From 2023 onwards, another 10 openings are already underway.

Of the 43 projects, 21 will be in the 4-star category, while 22 will aim for 5-star certification.

Top growth regions in Turkey

The fastest-growing hotel markets within Turkey are led by Istanbul. Widely seen as Turkey’s cultural and economic capital, Istanbul attracts vast numbers of both business and leisure travellers every year. To better accommodate its many visitors, Istanbul is getting 16 new hotels will 2,871 rooms.

Bodrum, a popular resort destination on the Aegean Sea will see five new hotels and resorts opening while three openings are planned for Turkey’s capital Ankara.

Top brands growing their footprint in Turkey

Hilton Worldwide is betting big on Turkey and takes the lead in terms of openings by international chains.

Hilton Garden Inn, DoubleTree by Hilton and Hilton Hotels & Resorts are the country’s most quickly expanding brands and will open 3, 3, and 2 properties respectively.

Noteworthy hotel projects in Turkey

The largest project set to open its doors by early 2021 is the 1,001-room KentPlus YALOVA Wellness SPA Resort in the province of Yalova. Set in a lesser-known area of Turkey, the KentPlus complex is surrounded by lush forests and offers guests access to the sea and thermal springs. The development will consist of three 5-star hotels spread over an area of 230,000 sqm.

By mid-2020 the Hilton Mall of Istanbul Hotel will add 180 rooms to the city’s market and be part of a mixed-use project featuring a large shopping centre, residences and an office building. Leisure facilities in the complex will include over 300 shops, Turkey’s largest Ferris wheel, a planetarium and an indoor ski slope.

Later this year, the Atakoy Jumeirah will launch on the outskirts of Istanbul. The 202-room property will be set in the Sea Pearl development and offer both luxurious hotel rooms as well as private residences. Additional facilities include a conference hall, a VIP Club and a sports area complete with swimming pools, a gym and a large spa and Turkish hammam.

Scheduled to open in Q2, 2022, the Hampton by Hilton Sakarya will launch in the quickly developing town of Serdivan, close to the Sakarya industrial zone and Sakarya University. The hotel will be within walking distance of Serdivan Shopping Mall and Cadde 54 Shopping Mall, as well as 10 kilometres from Sapanca, a popular location for hiking and other recreational activities.
