Country overview: The Philippines’ pipeline dominated by Manila [Infographic]

by | 01 Feb 2022 | Hotel Projects, Pipeline, Projects

A deep dive into the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database indicates that the country has 60 hotel schemes in the works, of which a third are located in the capital.

The Philippines has 60 hotel projects with a total of 15,353 rooms on its development slate, according to our in-house research team.

All roads lead to Manila

Manila, the island nation’s capital, is by far the country’s most active city overall, with no fewer than 19 properties and 4,820 keys on its books. This puts it miles ahead of nearest challengers Cebu City (seven hotels, 1,303 rooms) and Lapu-Lapu City (three schemes, 1,510 keys).

Not all of these planned developments are close to completion, however – only 22 properties with 5,761 rooms are expected to be ready this year. Another 12 hotels and 2,822 keys are scheduled to arrive next year, followed by eight more projects with 1,503 rooms in 2024, and 18 additional schemes with 5,267 keys in 2025 and beyond.

Interestingly, two-thirds of these projects relate to the four-star segment, rather than the luxury end of the market. We’re tracking 40 separate schemes with 9,879 rooms aiming for the four-star sector, with the remainder (20 properties, 5,474 keys) focusing on the five-star bracket.

A closer look at two standout hotels

There are plenty of developments worth following across the Philippines, but we’ve decided to concentrate on two eye-catching newbuilds that are currently under construction.

First up is The Westin Manila Sonata Place, which is being brought to life as we speak by a team that includes WV Coscolluela Architects (principal architect), SY^2 + Associates (structural designer) and FBEYE (interior design). Currently lined up to open in Q4 2022, it’ll feature 300 guestrooms, three F&B venues, a fitness studio, a spa, a swimming pool and more than 1,400 sq m of function space. Almost 350 private apartments are also being planned – owners of The Residences at The Westin Manila Sonata Place can look forward to enjoying a separate pool, lounge and fitness centre, as well as access to the hotel’s public areas.

Also worth highlighting is Citadines Benavidez Makati, part of an integrated scheme within the Makati Central Business District. There’ll be 145 studio, one- and two-bed apartments at this long-awaited property when it finally opens its doors in Q3 2021. Aedas – Singapore and Aidea – Manila are working on the architectural design, while the latter’s also handling the interiors.

Many TOPHOTELNEWS articles draw on exclusive information from the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database. This subscription-based product includes details of thousands of hotel projects around the world, along with the key decision-makers behind them. Please note, our data may differ from records held by other organisations. Generally, the database focuses on four- and five-star schemes of significant scale; tracks projects in either the vision, pre-planning, planning, under-construction, pre-opening or newly opened phase; and covers newbuilds, extensions, refurbishments and conversions.
