The TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database shows that over 1,300 hotel schemes are in the works across China, with Chengdu emerging as the most active city.

Our data suggests that 1,376 hotels with 326,592 keys are currently in the works around China. We look more closely at this ambitious pipeline – and pick out a few of the country’s top projects.

Hotel openings by year in China

2021 will be a busy year in the People’s Republic with 472 planned launches, adding 114,011 keys into the mix – 51 of these properties are already in the pre-opening phase. 2022 looks almost as crowded with 442 openings and 99,510 new rooms on their way.

In 2023, things will slow down quite a bit, as only 172 new properties and 40,970 keys have been mooted to date. For 2024 and beyond, another 290 hotels with 72,101 rooms are on the cards.

Of these upcoming hotel projects, 712 will be in the four-star category, while the remaining 664 will fall into the five-star segment.

China’s top urban hospitality markets

Chengdu, capital of the Sichuan province and home of the giant panda, is China’s most dynamic city in terms of openings – 62 hotels with 13,885 keys are in the pipeline here.

Not far behind, the economic powerhouse of Shanghai will get 50 additional properties with 12,784 rooms. And Nanjing, known for its beautiful surroundings, concludes our top three courtesy of its 46 new hotels and 9,679 keys.

Top three hotel brands expanding in China

Hilton Hotels & Resorts is really pushing for growth in China with 52 ongoing projects and 14,234 rooms.

However, Marriott Hotels & Resorts is hot on its heels – Marriott International’s flagship brand is aiming to build 50 hotels with 12,967 keys. Last but not least, Hilton Garden Inn will grow by 42 properties and 8,970 rooms.

Noteworthy hotel openings in China

A hospitality scheme worth keeping a close eye on, Le Méridien Tengchong will launch in the southern Chinese city of Tengchong in Yunnan. This project will be part of Napa Town, a new development in the downtown area close to shopping, natural attractions, galleries and museums. Guests can look forward to enjoying the onsite wellness area as well as the three F&B venues after long days spent exploring the city’s many heritage sites. An opening date has yet to be announced.

Elsewhere, Crowne Plaza Quanzhou Riverview will boast 372 rooms in the centre of Quanzhou when it opens in Q3 2021. The city’s international airport will be only a short drive away, and public transport will allow guests to easily reach business, cultural and commercial hubs. The inclusion of 1,633 sq m of versatile event space should make this property ideal for corporate and private gatherings too.

Sheraton Bengbu Longzihu Hotel, meanwhile, is perfectly located in the city’s new economic development zone next to Longzihu Lake; the city centre is only 15 minutes away by car. Many of its 400 rooms will feature views of the lake and surrounding greenery, while its three onsite restaurants will serve a variety of local and international creations. The opening date has been pencilled in for early 2021.
