Country overview: Austria’s hotel market to grow by 12,000 rooms [Infographic]

Austria’s hotel market is looking forward to a strong season of growth.

With over 12,000 rooms due to be added to Austria’s hotel market in the coming years, the Alpine nation is adapting to growing demand.

90 properties with 12,199 rooms will gradually be added to Austria’s hotel market over the coming years.

Busy years lie ahead

According to the TOPHOTELCONSTRUCTION online database, 90 hotel projects are currently in the pipeline in Austria:

For 2020, 29 hotels are slated to open in Austria and will bring 4,125 rooms. 2021 looks similar with 21 openings and 2,756 rooms.

For 2022 only 9 properties are confirmed so far, while 2023 looks quiet with 7 new hotels. More projects can of course still be added to this pipeline though.

From 2024 onwards another 24 hotels are confirmed, some of which are already in the planning or even the construction phase.

The focus clearly lies on mid-scale and upper midscale properties with 36 of the 90 new hotels earmarked as 4-star properties and 26 set to earn 3 stars. However, the luxury hotel market is also going strong with 20 new hotels in the pipeline. Only 8 budget hotels on a two-star level are slated to open in Austria in the coming years.

Austria’s top urban hotel markets

With 27 openings and 5,488 new rooms, Austria’s capital, Vienna, takes the cake in this category.

Graz and Innsbruck follow in a very distant second and third place respectively while Schruns and Steyr complete the top 5 cities with 3 openings each.

Fastest-growing hotel brands in Austria

Austria’s fastest-growing hotel brands reflect the trend towards more mid-scale and upper midscale hotels.

B&B Hotels, Best Western as well as the modern hotel and apartment brand Harry’s Home will each open 3 new properties around the Alpine nation.

Noteworthy hotel projects in Austria

The largest new hotel on the Austrian market is the Student Hotel Wien, an 822-room property which will be a mix of student rooms, hotel rooms and co-living studios. It will include a variety of facilities such as study and gaming areas, meeting rooms, close to 1,500 sqm of co-working space for start-ups and local businesses, restaurants, bars, a gym and sports facilities.

The Arborea Montafon Resort St. Gallenkirch is another impressive property. This luxury resort in one of Austria’s top Alpine destinations will welcome discerning guests into a world of mountainside extravagance. 112 rooms and 46 chalet apartments will offer stunning views and access to various outdoor activities.

By the beginning of 2021, the small town of Nesslegg will be home to the DoubleTree by Hilton – Hilton am Arlberg. This condo-style property will include suites, chalets and apartments as well as mixed-use retail spaces. 16 premium private residences will be sold as private homes and include optional concierge services and access to hotel facilities.
