The TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database reveals that 89 hotel schemes are currently in Spain’s pipeline, with the capital Madrid seeing the bulk of development.

Our researchers are currently tracking 89 hotel projects with a grand total of 16,518 rooms across Spain, all of which are set to complete in the next few years. We take a closer look at these projects and consider which ones you should particularly take note of.

Spain’s hotel openings by year

The remainder of 2021 is looking like a busy period for Spain’s hospitality scene. Some 35 hotels and 5,677 rooms are getting ready to open their doors for the first time this year – 17 of these properties are already in the pre-opening phase.

In 2022, when Covid-related travel restrictions will hopefully have eased, another 23 projects with 4,161 rooms are slated to go live. For 2023, things look a bit quieter, with only 12 launches and 1,967 keys due to be added to the market. And another 19 hotel projects and 4,713 rooms are on the cards for 2024 and beyond.

The split between four- and five-star hotel developments is almost even – 45 of the properties we’re following are in the four-star segment, while the other 44 are in the luxury category.

Top urban growth markets in Spain

Madrid will see 12 projects with 1,926 rooms finish in the years ahead, making the Spanish capital the country’s single most active urban destination.

Meanwhile, Catalonia’s economic powerhouse Barcelona will get eight new hotels with 2,214 keys. And third place goes to the tourist hotspot of Benidorm, which will see four properties with 1,260 rooms open their doors soon.

Spain’s most dynamic hotel brands

In terms of Spain’s most active flags, Paradores Hoteles takes the lead here with four projects and 241 rooms in the pipeline.

Hard Rock Hotels & Casinos, by way of comparison, will only launch three properties, but these will have an impressive total key count of 1,265. Vincci Hoteles will also open three hotels, albeit with a comparatively small number of rooms – 244 to be precise.

Top hotel openings to watch out for

Known for its luxurious golf resorts and beautiful beaches, Marbella will soon be home to yet another elegant hotel. Operating under the Club Med brand, Magna Palace will offer 373 rooms and suites with stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea from early 2022. The property’s exclusive gourmet restaurant, moreover, will boast panoramic views for guests to enjoy before they head to the onsite disco or cinema for evening entertainment.

The recently launched Nobu Hotel Barcelona had to temporarily suspend operations due to the ongoing pandemic. However, once the 259-key property reopens, guests will once again be able to enjoy characteristically sleek design by Rockwell Group, as well as the brand’s signature dining experiences. Thanks to its enviable location in the Torre Catalunya, diners will get to enjoy their exquisite meals while taking in sweeping city vistas.

Set to open in early 2022, meanwhile, Hard Rock Hotel Barcelona will offer a stunning rooftop terrace and bar with a swimming pool, two speciality restaurants, a lobby bar with a grab-and-go service and a Music Bar. Guestrooms will boast luxurious private balconies overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The property is located next to the Port Fòrum marina in Sant Adrià del Besòs, with direct subway and tram access to Barcelona’s city centre.
