A peek inside the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database shows that thousands more rooms are on the cards across Switzerland, helped by a strong showing from Geneva.

Switzerland’s well-established hospitality market is due to grow further in the coming years. Our research indicates that 56 separate hotel projects with 6,847 rooms are currently in the pipeline around the country.

Switzerland’s hotel openings by year

Interestingly, it seems that 2022 will be a busy year for Switzerland, with 14 properties and 1,544 rooms gearing up to go live here. There’ll be a further ten openings in 2023 and again in 2024, moreover, with 995 and 1,310 rooms respectively.

The long-term development slate also looks pretty packed – 22 projects and 2,998 have already been pencilled in for 2025 and beyond.

Of the country’s 56 new hotel projects, the majority (37) will be in the four-star category. The remaining 19 will join the ranks of the country’s many five-star establishments.

Key growth markets in Switzerland

Geneva, home to one of the UN Secretariat’s four major offices worldwide, leads the pack in terms of most active destinations, with five ongoing projects and 1,292 rooms coming soon. The banking hotspot of Zürich and the scenic town of Grindelwald will each get four new properties, with 619 keys lined up for the former and 235 for the latter.

Looking at the room counts more closely, it’s apparent that the Grindelwald schemes will be much smaller than those in Switzerland’s two largest cities.

Interesting new hotels on the books in Switzerland

The small town of Arbon on the beautiful Bodensee will see the B_Smart Hotel Arbon open by mid-2023. The existing Metropol hotel will be pulled down to make room for the modern Riva development, which will house this new hotel. Spread across seven storeys, its 63 rooms and serviced residences will be complemented by a bar and restaurant with 70 seats, several meeting rooms, and a lakeview gym up on the sixth floor.

In Sion, an attractive town in the south-west of Switzerland, Hotel Cour de Gare will launch in Q3 2024. This 100-key property will be located close to the main station, making it a convenient stopover point for travellers on their way elsewhere, as well as those wishing to explore the area more thoroughly. Nearby, guests will be able to take their pick from a wealth of interesting venues, including welcoming bars, cosy restaurants, and a lively concert and event hall.
