Country overview: 42 new hotels to go live in Portugal [Infographic]

by | 23 Mar 2021 | Projects

The TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database paints a picture of the state of hotel development across Portugal, with Lisbon proving particularly active.

Our data indicates that 42 new hotels with 7,079 rooms are being progressed around Portugal right now despite the pandemic. We take a closer look at this pipeline – and zero in on the country’s top projects.

Portugal’s hotel openings by year

2021 will see 16 Portuguese launches in total, adding 2,120 rooms to the nation’s offering. Five of these properties are already in the pre-opening phase.

In 2022, another 11 hotels with 1,980 rooms will open their doors. Seven projects are due for completion in 2023, moreover, while eight are on the books for 2024 and beyond.

Of Portugal’s 42 pipeline projects, just under 75% will be in the four-star category. The rest will fall into the five-star luxury segment.

Growth markets in Portugal

The capital Lisbon will get 14 new hotels with 2,490 rooms in the coming years, making it the country’s fastest growing market by some distance.

Not to be overlooked, Porto will see eight new properties with 1,801 rooms go live. Meanwhile, the popular tourist destination of Cascais has two ongoing projects and 173 keys.

Top hotel brands expanding in Portugal

Meliá Hotels & Resorts leads our list of the country’s most active brands with four hotels and 782 rooms in the pipeline.

Elsewhere, Turim Hotels will grow its national footprint by three properties with 339 rooms, and Radisson Red is working on two projects with a total of 568 keys.

Interesting hotel openings in Portugal

Legacy Hotel Cascais, Curio Collection by Hilton will sit in the historic heart of Cascais. Most of the hotel’s 58 rooms will have balconies, offering stunning ocean and courtyard views, while the property will also incorporate a lobby bar, two restaurants, a swimming pool, a spa and a fitness centre. Thanks to its prime location just 28 km from Lisbon, and with easy access to the city’s business parks, the hotel should appeal to both leisure and corporate travellers when it opens in Q3 2023.

Hilton Porto Gaia is another property from the eponymous American hotel giant that’s due to launch in Q3 2021. This 194-room hotel, set amid the area’s famed port wine cellars, will include a restaurant, lobby bar and destination bar with panoramic views of Porto’s historic centre and the Douro River, as well as a spa offering an indoor pool with dynamic water jets, sauna, Turkish baths and gym. The scheme will also be ideal for hosting events, with a 356-seat auditorium and 1,688 sq m of meeting space, including a 735 sq m ballroom.

We conclude our list of noteworthy launches with, curiously enough, yet another Hilton Worldwide property scheduled to open in Q3 2021. Sé Catedral Hotel Porto, Tapestry Collection by Hilton will be situated in one of Porto’s best neighbourhoods, a Unesco World Heritage Site. Some of Porto’s main attractions, including the 12th-century Sé Cathedral, Clérigos Tower and Livraria Lello, are within a ten-minute walk of the 77-room hotel, and guests will also benefit from easy access to São Bento Train Station and Francisco Sá Carneiro International Airport.
