by | 15 Jun 2021 | Pipeline, Projects

Our researchers have combed through the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database to get the inside scoop on hotel development in the Land of the Free.

An impressive total of 1,520 hotel schemes with 298,809 keys are currently in the pipeline throughout the US, according to our data. We take a closer look at what’s coming up and highlight some of the most interesting projects.

US hotel openings by year

The remainder of 2021 will be very busy, it seems, with 470 hotels and 94,479 rooms set to launch. Of these, 167 are already in the pre-opening phase.

2022 will also be fairly jam-packed, with 397 projects and 74,122 rooms due for completion over the course of the year. Another 190 hotels and 43,281 keys are on the books for 2023, while 463 schemes and 86,827 rooms have been pencilled in for 2024 and beyond.

Of these 1,520 hotels, the vast majority (1,198) will be in the four-star category, while the remaining 322 will be in the luxury segment.

Top five urban growth markets in the US

As in previous such overviews, New York City comes out well ahead on a city-by-city basis – 72 hotels with 18,842 rooms will soon go live in the Big Apple. The movie town of LA will open 57 new properties with 12,008 keys, meanwhile, and Atlanta will get 40 additional hotels with 8,701 rooms.

Elsewhere, iconic tourism destination Miami will see 38 schemes open their doors; the larger average project size here is reflected in an impressive total room count of 10,202. And Nashville, the country-music capital, concludes our list of top five urban growth markets, with 33 projects and 6,941 rooms in the pipeline.

Top five hotel brands expanding in the US

Hilton Worldwide is aggressively growing its presence in the US and has two of its brands at the top of this leaderboard.

Hampton by Hilton ranks first with 44 new hotels and 5,389 keys on the way – but Home2 Suites by Hilton isn’t far behind with 42 projects and 5,083 rooms set to bolster the group’s long-stay offering. Cambria Hotels will open 38 hotels with 5,224 keys, incidentally, followed by AC Hotels by Marriott and Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott with 34 projects apiece.

Noteworthy hotel openings in the US

A project that’s well worth adding to your watchlist is the vast Marriott Hotel and Convention Center Chula Vista Bayfront in Southern California. This 1,600-room hotel will open by mid-2023 as part of a wider mixed-use project; among the facilities being promised are retail stores, restaurant and bar/lounge spaces, a spa, recreational facilities, a pool, and bicycle and boat rentals.

Marriott International has also recently completed the revamp of Arizona’s largest hotel, Sheraton Phoenix Downtown. Importantly, the 1,000-room hotel now offers community-fluid spaces that feel warm and inviting for both locals and visitors, as well as freshly refurbished rooms decked out with the latest technology. This stylish property encapsulates the wide-ranging Sheraton brand relaunch that the group has been working on for some time.

Last but not least, Drury Plaza Hotel Orlando Lake Buena Vista will open in late 2021, offering 604 rooms. Guests can look forward to enjoying a resort-style pool, splash pad, poolside cantina bar and grill, grab-and-go marketplace, and exciting kitchen and bar concept. The nearby Walt Disney World Resort, with its countless iconic rides and attractions, will undoubtedly help pull in the crowds.

Many TOPHOTELNEWS articles draw on exclusive information from the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database. This subscription-based product includes details of thousands of hotel projects around the world, along with the key decision-makers behind them. Please note, our data may differ from records held by other organisations. Generally, the database focuses on four- and five-star schemes of significant scale; tracks projects in either the vision, pre-planning, planning, under-construction, pre-opening or newly opened phase; and covers newbuilds, extensions, refurbishments and conversions.
