Corinthia’s growth plans

Europe's Corinthia Hotels has just taken its first steps across the Atlantic, opening a hotel in New York - but there are plenty more Corinthia hotels in development.

Bespoke luxury hotel group Corinthia Hotels has signalled its plans for further international growth, launching The Surrey in New York, its latest addition to the portfolio.

The company’s first hotel in North America is on New York’s Upper East Side. The 16 storey property is owned by transatlantic investors the Reuben Brothers, and has been transformed into a luxury boutique hotel with 70 rooms, 30 suites and an additional 14 private residences. Guests and visitors alike can enjoy an interior that includes a spa, and Casa Tua branded restaurant.

A community resource

“We aim to be a cultural mainstay of our neighborhood and add to the dynamic and ever-evolving tapestry of fashion, creativity, and art that surrounds us,” said Pradeep Raman, managing director of The Surrey. And Simon Casson, CEO of Corinthia Hotels, added: “We see this hotel as a love letter to New York and a beacon of the city’s creative spirit. As we embark on global growth, The Surrey is in many ways a new flagship, representative of the warm familial spirit of Corinthia that makes all guests feel perfectly at home.”

Corinthia was founded as a hotel company in Malta in 1968, and exported its Mediterranean soul around the globe to become a small yet very international brand over the following years. As at the end of 2024, the company had hotels in Malta, New York, London, Lisbon, St Petersburg, Tripoli, and the Pearl in Qatar.

But more impressive is the group’s strong pipeline, including Brussels, Bucharest, Qatar, Rome and Riyadh, alongside resorts in the Maldives and beyond. In Qatar, the Corinthia hotel on Gewan Island is preparing to open in 2025. The 110 room property will overlook the golf course and beach club, while its event spaces will have capacity for 1,000.

In Saudi Arabia, Corinthia is one of the luxury brands destined to put in an appearance at the Diriyah Gate development, as the country builds its international tourism infrastructure at an astonishing pace. The 90 room Corinthia Hotel & Residences Diriyah Gate is expected to launch in early 2027.

Expansion in Europe

Early 2025 will see Corinthia Rome open, with a 60 room hotel created from the conversion of the Central Bank of Italy building in Parliament Square. In Romania, work is underway to refurbish a city landmark to create Corinthia Grand Hotel du Boulevard Bucharest. A listed building from 1867 will be transformed into the 50 room luxury hotel, expected to open in 2025.

Meanwhile, the Corinthia name is also heading into the resort space. Corinthia Maldives is in development on the destination’s Kaafu Atoll, which features two islands. The larger island will house the main hotel, which will have 73 rooms, while a smaller adjacent island will offer a secluded private space for guests.
