City Overview: Shanghai’s hotel market to grow by nearly 12,000 rooms [Infographic]

Shanghai, one of China’s most important business hubs, is home to a buzzing hospitality market that is continuing to grow at pace. Over the coming years, we are expecting 48 new hotels comprising 11,659 rooms in total to be developed across the city.
Busy years ahead for Shanghai’s hotel market
China seems to be making good progress when it comes to containing Covid19. This surely bodes well for the 12 new hotel projects and 2,272 rooms that Shanghai currently has in the pipeline for 2020, which will hopefully be ready before the year is out.
Nine more hotels are planned for 2021, bringing another 2,710 rooms into play next year. Seven hotels are being progressed with a view to opening in 2022, while four hotels are being lined up for 2023, and another 16 are on the books for 2024 and beyond.
Of these 48 new hotels, 27 will be 4-star properties, while 21 will be in the 5-star segment.
Citadines apart’hotels leads the way
In terms of the overall number of projects, the fastest-growing brand in Shanghai right now is Citadines apart’hotels – its extended-stay offering is expanding rapidly, with four new properties (702 rooms) on the way.
Elsewhere, Artyzen Habitat plans to open three properties, bringing 760 rooms to China’s financial powerhouse. And luxury brand Shangri-La Hotels is going to launch two more properties, introducing a total of 804 additional rooms.
Noteworthy properties opening in Shanghai
The largest project underway in Shanghai is the Montigo Resorts development. It will offer around 1,000 rooms across four themed hotels when it starts welcoming guests from Q2 2022. The project’s centrepiece will be an alpine-themed snow park complete with a ski slope where guests can enjoy winter sports.
Another project that many in the industry are keenly looking forward to is the stunning Hilton Shanghai Songjiang Guangfulin, which will launch in late 2020 and welcome guests to 240 beautiful rooms. Located close to Songjiang University Town and Guangfulin Relics Park, it is likely to appeal to tourists who want to explore more of China’s history and visit important archaeological sites within the expansive park.
Situated in the heart of the Shanghai International Tourism Region, meanwhile, the 240-room Even Hotels Shanghai will likely be a top choice for both local and international guests looking to experience some of the city’s best entertainment offerings. The most famous is, of course, Disneyland Shanghai, but Yioulai Shopping Village, the ecological park and the MAXUS Plaza may also help keep occupancy rates high throughout the year.
