Popular Chinese resort destination Sanya will see rapid growth in its hotel sector, especially in the five-star segment, according to the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database.
It may surprise you to learn that 31 separate hotel projects, encompassing 8,396 rooms in total, are currently in Sanya’s development pipeline.

Sanya’s hotel development plans
We begin by pointing out that eight projects with 1,795 rooms are planned in Sanya for the remainder of 2020. 2021 and 2022 will each see four hotel openings with 950 and 1,150 rooms respectively, meanwhile, and 15 more projects are currently underway for completion in 2023 and beyond.
Ten of Sanya’s 31 new projects will be in the four-star category while 21 will be in the five-star segment, underpinning the destination’s reputation for welcoming high-end travellers.
Top hotel brands expanding in Sanya
Sanya is becoming an increasingly attractive location for the world’s top hotel groups.
Marriott International’s St Regis brand, for example, intends to launch two properties with a total of 800 rooms in the city. Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts will also open two hotels here, but with a total room count of just 400. And Hilton Hotels & Resorts has one opening on the cards, adding 505 keys to the city’s books.
Top hotel projects underway in Sanya
The database indicates that Sanya’s largest ongoing hotel project is the 550-room Thanyapura Resort, which is due to open in Q4 2022. The Sanya resort will be spread across 58 hectares between Yalong and Haitang Bay and will be designed by Dallas-based architectural firm HKS, which is known for its cutting-edge sports stadiums, hotels and healthcare facilities. The property will offer 300 rooms and 250 villas, world-class sports facilities featuring swimming, running, tennis, cycling, soccer and multi-sport areas, a lifestyle medicine clinic focusing on chronic disease reversal programmes, a wellness centre, a members-only leisure club and multipurpose function rooms, as well as food, beverage and retail outlets.
Another ambitious project is the 400-room St Regis Qingshui Bay Resort, which boasts a sought-after address along Hainan’s pristine bay. Nearby, a pedestrian shopping street, a golf course, restaurants, bars and entertainment venues provide numerous activities for guests. Offering rooms, suites and spacious villas, the resort will welcome domestic and international visitors to enjoy a comfortable stay surrounded by understated elegance upon completion.
And situated in Haitang Bay, Sanya’s premium neighbourhood, the luxurious 251-room Kimpton Resort Sanya Haitang Bay will offer guests direct beach access once it opens in late 2020. This luxury hotel boasts a rooftop pool and a spa where guests can relax after taking advantage of the many activities on offer nearby. This includes playing a few holes at the world’s largest golf club Mission Hills Haikou, exploring nearby caves and forests, or trying a variety of water sports.
