The TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database reveals that 17,790 keys are in the pipeline across New York City, with Virgin Hotels and Ace Hotels among those on the march.

Our researchers report that 67 hotel schemes with 17,790 keys are currently in the works around New York City. We take a closer look at these new properties and consider which ones you should particularly take note of.

Hotel openings by year in New York City

Some 34 launches are planned for the Big Apple in 2021, bringing 9,490 new rooms into play – 17 of these projects are already in the pre-opening phase. In 2022, another ten properties with 3,960 keys will launch. Nothing is currently pencilled in for 2023, but for 2024 and beyond, a further 23 projects and 4,340 rooms have been mooted.

Of the 67 hotels that we’re tracking, 48 will be in the four-star segment, while the remaining 19 are in the five-star category.

New York City’s most active hotel brands

Marriott International seems to be the hotel group with the largest number of new properties earmarked for New York City. Three hotels with 1,431 keys are set to carry the Marriott Hotels & Resorts flag, while another three will be part of Aloft Hotels, growing the music-inspired brand’s footprint by 907 keys.

IHG’s Hotel Indigo brand will also launch three properties in the city, with a total room count of 430.

The coolest new hotels in New York City

Virgin Hotel New York is one of the city’s most anticipated launches. Set in an enviable location on Broadway, the 500-key property will open in Q3 2021; its rooms will rest on a 90,000 sq ft podium stocked with F&B establishments, outdoor terraces, meeting rooms, lounges and a fitness centre. And Swingers, an upscale indoor miniature golf course that also serves cocktails and street food, has leased 22,000 sq ft of space in the basement for its first American location.

Just a few doors down, the glitzy Ritz-Carlton Manhattan Nomad will open its doors at roughly the same time. The hotel tower will house 250 rooms and serviced residences, and there’ll also be a fine-dining restaurant, club lounge, spa, fitness centre and rooftop bar. Brought to life by Yabu Pushelberg, the interior’s aesthetic will blur the lines between private and public spaces, creating an atmosphere that can be private if needed or open when desired.

Elsewhere, the 285-key Ace Hotel Brooklyn is set in the tree-lined neighbourhood of Boerum Hill at the intersection of several lively areas. These diverse surroundings are celebrated in the hotel’s design by Roman and Williams, longtime Ace collaborators. Guests can explore a verdant indoor garden with double-sided fireplace and generous skylight, indoor and outdoor workspaces, a fitness centre, event spaces and a lobby bar.
