by | 10 Oct 2020 | Pipeline, Projects

Nanjing’s room count will grow significantly over the next few years, helped by a slew of new properties from global hotel giant Marriott International, according to the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database.

Our researchers report that Nanjing’s hotel pipeline boasts 46 separate projects under development, comprising 9,532 rooms between them. We find out more about what to expect from one of China’s biggest cities.

Nanjing looks forward to a busy few years

In Q4 2020, five hotels will open in Nanjing, adding 808 rooms to the city’s offering – two schemes are currently in the pre-opening phase. Next year, 21 projects are due for completion and these will bring 4,086 keys into play. There will be 11 extra properties in 2022, meanwhile, followed by five more in 2023 and four in 2024.

Of Nanjing’s 46 new hotels, 21 will be in the four-star category. The other 25 will sit squarely in the five-star bracket.

Marriott driving hotel development in Nanjing

With six ongoing projects, Marriott is the city’s fastest growing hotel group. The 200-key Nanjing Westin Hotel Garden Expo and the 200-key Autograph Collection Nanjing Garden Expo will launch in Q2 2021, making them the company’s next properties to go live. They will be part of Nanjing’s sprawling Garden Expo area, which will feature stunning gardens and fairgrounds.

Marriott Nanjing Software Park will follow in late 2021. This 300-room hotel will be part of a mixed-use project with apartments and a shopping centre in a convenient location close to one of Nanjing’s top business districts, making it ideal for business travellers.

In early 2022, moreover, Nanjing Marriott Hotel Agile Huigang City will sit within a new urban development on the banks of the Yangtze River. The 200-room hotel will play a key role in the creation of an exciting neighbourhood complete with a business district, luxury residences and various entertainment options.

Around the same time, JW Marriott Nanjing will open as part of the Olympic Sports Centre. This 344-room hotel will be in a 400-metre-high tower, making it the second-highest building in Jiangsu Province.

The last Marriott project is slated to go live in Q2 2022. W Hotel Nanjing Huaqiao City will be a 300-room hotel welcoming guests with its signature modern style and understated luxury.

A new luxury icon to land in Nanjing

Of course, Marriott is not the only company launching properties in Nanjing.

To give just one example, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group is planning to open a 106-key luxury hotel in late 2020. Mandarin Oriental Hotel Nanjing will be close to the Qinhuai River and other historic landmarks, including the Gate of China, and boast an array of facilities such as three restaurants and bars, adaptable meeting facilities, a large ballroom and a signature spa.
