A peek into the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database reveals that 30 new four- and five-star hotels will open their doors in the holy city of Makkah in the coming years.

30 hotel projects with an impressive 33,526 rooms are currently in Makkah’s development pipeline. We find out more about these upcoming openings and identify which ones are worth keeping a close eye on.

Busy years lie ahead

For the remaining months of 2020, five launches are scheduled in Makkah. They will introduce 3,108 rooms to the city’s key count. All five projects are already in the pre-opening phase and are likely to open their doors right on schedule.

2021 will also be a busy year, with eight hotels going live. They will bring a total of 14,342 additional rooms to the city, thus drastically increasing its ability to host guests during the peak time of year for pilgrimages.

Things will slow down a bit in 2022, which will only see three hotels with 1,771 rooms open. For 2023 and beyond, another 14 projects with 14,305 keys are currently on the cards.

The split between four- and five-star properties, meanwhile, is almost even with 16 hotels going for four stars and 14 aiming for five-star classification.

A giant new hotel near the Grand Mosque

In late 2021, the 1,490-room Jabal Omar Address Makkah will open its doors just steps away from the Grand Mosque. The hotel’s two elegantly designed identical towers, which are connected by a skybridge, will form the centrepiece of the Jabal Omar development. Within this new neighbourhood, guests and residents will find malls, retail amenities, prayer areas and other lifestyle and entertainment facilities.

The hotel’s striking exterior is the brainchild of French architect Arcrea Studio while the dazzling interior has been designed by Wilson Associates. Emaar Hospitality Group will manage the property, bringing another stunning hotel into its already impressive portfolio.

IHCL prepares to introduce a luxury hotel to Makkah

The 304-key Taj Makkah, by contrast, is scheduled to launch in late 2023. The Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) has partnered with UAE-based architectural firm HOK and Umm Al Qura Development and Construction Company to build the hotel as part of the King Abdul Aziz Road (KAAR) project, one of the largest urban rejuvenation projects in the city.

Taj Makkah will be within walking distance of the Grand Mosque, the main draw for over six million pilgrims who visit the holy city each year. It will also be close to the commercial offices, stores and restaurants within the KAAR project.
