City overview: Luxury hotels dominate Hangzhou’s development pipeline [Infographic]
No fewer than 44 Hangzhou hotel schemes are currently being tracked in the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database – most of which are five-star affairs.
Our researchers have reported that 44 hotels with 10,437 keys are being progressed right now across Hangzhou, the Chinese megacity that’s home to the West Lake Unesco World Heritage Site and a burgeoning financial sector. We take a closer look at its most exciting ongoing projects.
Hotel openings in Hangzhou by year
In the remainder of 2021, 13 hotels (with 3,050 keys) are due to be completed, but only one of them is currently in the pre-opening phase, which rather begs the question of whether some of these launches may yet be delayed.
Looking ahead to 2022, we’re forecasting that a further 17 properties will go live. Things may slow down significantly in 2023, with only three more openings due to complete as things stand, before another 11 projects come online in 2024 and beyond.
Of the 44 hotels that we’re tracking, 19 are in the four-star category, while the majority (25) fall into the five-star luxury segment.
The Chinese megacity’s most active hotel brands
Local and international brands alike are expanding their offering in Hangzhou – the four most active brands in our rankings each plan to open two properties in the city.
Topping the bill is Hilton Hotels & Resorts courtesy of its total room count of 564, followed by Hotel Indigo’s 525. However, Hualuxe Hotels & Resorts isn’t far behind with 500 new rooms on its development slate, and Citadines Apart’hotels is also growing strongly with 400 additional keys on the way.
Must-know hotel projects in Hangzhou
By late 2021, The Chedi Hangzhou Tianmu Town will open its doors as part of a larger mixed-use urban development. This five-star hotel will comprise 120 rooms and elegant facilities designed by Belt Collins and HBA, inspired by the Chinese Tang style. The Qianwang Cultural Center, the Tianmu Mountain Pavilion, commercial and medical establishments, serviced apartments, independent villas, and large and small courtyards will also be part of the scheme.
Hangzhou Fuchun Hilton Hotel, meanwhile, will become one of the city’s most luxurious business hotels upon completion – although an exact opening date has yet to be confirmed. The 364-key property will occupy a 30-floor tower overlooking the river, offering a banquet room for up to 600 guests, ten multifunctional conference rooms, a 24-hour restaurant, a fitness centre, a luxury spa and an indoor swimming pool.
Last but not least, Pullman Hangzhou Binjiang Excellence will feature 307 rooms once it launches in late 2022. It’s set on one of the city’s main thoroughfares in the heart of Binjiang, the city’s fintech hub, which means it’s sure to appeal to business travellers as well as more leisure-focused guests.
