City overview: Chengdu maintains robust hotel pipeline amid pandemic [Infographic]

Work is continuing apace to build new hotels in one of China’s biggest cities

No fewer than 60 hotel development projects, encompassing 13,672 rooms in total, are currently being brought forward in Chengdu.

One of China’s biggest cities, Chengdu is an important metropolis and a key engine of the country’s astounding economic growth in recent years. Its hotel development pipeline certainly seems healthy despite the ongoing coronavirus, which has stopped much of the global hospitality market in its tracks.

This could be because Asia’s cities appear to be recovering from the pandemic faster than those in Europe and North America, perhaps due to the stringent measures taken to control the virus across the region. We take a deep dive inside the hotel projects currently underway in Chengdu.

Onwards and upwards in Chengdu

China currently seems to have the Covid19 crisis under control, and this spells good news for the country’s hotel market. The world’s most populous nation has become a hotbed of hotel activity in recent years, often outdoing the US when it comes to projects in development.

Chengdu definitely feeds into this wider picture – currently, the city has 60 projects in its pipeline, which are set to bring an additional 13,672 rooms online. 28 of these are 4-star properties while an impressive 32 are 5-star, positioning the future of Chengdu’s hotel offering firmly in the upper echelons of the market.

As for timeframes, 17 projects are due to open in 2020, with a further 22 next year and four the year after that. Big-name international brands account for much of the growth, with Courtyard by Marriott, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts and Ascott The Residence each boasting two properties apiece over the coming years.

Notable hotel-development projects in Chengdu

Panda Thema Hotel is the largest hotel project on the cards in Chengdu, with no fewer than 462 rooms. Currently, under construction, the scheme is set to welcome guests towards the end of this year, and promises to offer a fun and friendly experience for families and friends. It will be the largest panda-themed hotel in China, and is expected to become one of the city’s star attractions.

By contrast, Primus Hotel Chengdu Greenland Center is a business-focused property geared towards corporate travelers coming to the city for work. This 4-star, newbuild project will form part of the Greenland Centre complex and boast 450 rooms, as well as ample conference and meeting space. The hotel is set to open at the start of 2021.

Also worth pointing out is Regal Xindu Hotel, a luxury 5-star newbuild property, which will offer 310 rooms and suites within an eye-catching construction in the city’s Xindu District. The hotel will have ample leisure facilities, while extended-stay guests can choose to base themselves in the private residences also being constructed in one of the two towers onsite. The project will open in the third quarter of 2021.

Finally, W Chengdu is a luxury 5-star newbuild property located in a prime position next to the U Fun Plaza in Chengdu’s CBD. 297 rooms will wow guests with the luxurious standards typical of W hotels, and the property also has four restaurants and bars ideal for socialising and entertaining. The hotel is due to open later this year.
