According to the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database, Shanghai’s hotel market will grow steadily in the coming years, with dozens of four- and five-star properties planned.

Shanghai’s thriving hospitality scene will be boosted by the completion of 52 hotel schemes with 12,259 rooms over the next few years, our researchers report. We take a closer look at what’s currently on the development slate over in China’s economic powerhouse.

Shanghai’s hotel openings by year

To start with, 2022 looks very exciting for Shanghai, with no fewer than 17 properties and 5,419 rooms due to open. For both 2023 and 2024, meanwhile, 12 hotels with 2,351 and 2,448 keys respectively are in the pipeline at present.

A further 11 projects have already been pencilled in for 2025 and beyond.

Of the 52 hotels that we’re tracking, just over half (29) will belong to the four-star segment. The remaining 23 are firmly in the luxury five-star category.

Top hotel launches coming in Shanghai

The first scheme to look at closely is Rocco Forte Hotel Shanghai West Bund. This 219-room property will open towards the end of next year at the Huangpu riverfront in the vibrant neighbourhood of West Bund, showcasing exquisite design by Nikken Sekkei, Olga Polizzi and Muza Lab. It’ll occupy the top floors of a soaring skyscraper and offer guests spectacular views of the city.

We’d also like to draw your attention to Holiday Inn Hotel T3 Pudong Airport, due to land in 2024. The site earmarked for this 200-room hotel is located so close to the airport that travellers will be able to walk to the check-in counters and business areas. It’ll be part of a dual-branded IHG property alongside InterContinental Shanghai Pudong Airport.

Lastly, and casting our gaze way into the future, Rosewood Shanghai is planning to launch in 2028. Set in the Suhe Creek area, this elegant 200-room property will occupy the top floors of a skyscraper and offer guests sweeping vistas of the city and the Huangpu River. Onsite, guests will be able to enjoy all of the top-end amenities and services that they’ve come to expect from Rosewood Hotel Group’s iconic ultra-luxury brand.
