Cooper Carry, Danny Forster & Architecture, and SB Architects will compete for the grand prize in New York in October

Radical Innovation, a competition that challenges designers, hoteliers, and students to pioneer compelling ideas in travel and hospitality, announces the finalists for its 13th annual edition. We take a look at some of these ingenious designs.

Round up of 3 amazing designs

Radical Innovation is a competition, award and community that exists to “empower creative thinkers across hospitality, travel and design, according to the competition’s website. “Through an annual competition, Radical Innovation mobilizes disruptors from around the world with the ideas to propel the industry forward. The result is a creative community gathered by the same passion for innovation, introducing the dreamers to those equipped with the necessary resources to bring such concepts to life.”

Needless to say, the finalists for this year’s award are dramatic and ambitious, each as daring as the next. The three finalists in the professionals category are Infinite Explorer by SB Architects, San Francisco; Volumetric High-Rise Modular Hotel by Danny Forster & Architecture, New York; and Connecticut by Cooper Carry, New York.

The future of modular hotels is radical

Two of the finalists, Connectic by Cooper Carry Architects and Volumetric by Danny Forster & Architecture, deal with modular construction techniques aimed at combining efficiency with flexibility and style. Connectic uses modular construction to fill underutilized spaces by installing collapsible and reusable units that can be fitted into small infill sites in dense urban areas. The model can be used to increase the volume of available keys and maximise vacant space next to existing hotels.

Volumetric by Danny Forster & Architecture is set to be the tallest modular hotel upon completion in 2020. The hotel will expand upon modular technologies that have already been used in hotel construction, taking this property to the next level in terms of sophisticated modular design. Using VR software, offsite quality control, streamlined construction processes and cutting edge proprietary technology to create an architecturally stunning hospitality concept.

Explore the railways of the American West

Infinite Explorer by SB Architects gives guests the chance to experience the vast American West as it has never been experienced before. Infinite Explorer allows travelers to connect with remote parts of the US by reclaiming the abandoned railway route that weaves through the wilderness. Certain stops along the train route have been taken over by the architects, and guests can partake in unique wellness and outdoor activities, as well as fine dining experiences.

These three finalists will pitch their designs at the New Museum in New York City in the third quarter of this year, after which a live audience will vote on the grand prize winner, who will claim the $10,000 prize money. The runner-up will be awarded $5,000, and all of the finalists will meet industry experts who can help further their concept.
