The Peninsula Hotel Presidential suite in Shangai

With a massive population of more than 24 million people, Shanghai, China has roughly the same population as all of Australia. Population is not the only metric in which Shanghai is a world leader, though.

In fact, Shanghai is also one of the world’s wealthiest cities, considered as well by many to be one of China’s most international cities. According to Forbes, the city is also home to a whopping 40 total billionaires, a large number by any standard.

The question then becomes how far does money go for some in Shanghai? The global new outlet CNBC recently explored the luxurious and exorbitant corners of Shanghai, indulging in luxuries that ranged from swanky hotels to yachts to fine dining experiences.

For the global hospitality market, it is perhaps most notable that the outlet found a $22,000 hotel suite available in the city. Dubbed the Peninsula Presidential Suite, this one is for international dignitaries and celebrities who frequently stay at the Shanghai hotel.

Here’s the thing though: one night at The Peninsula’s Presidential Suite will set you back by a whopping $22,000 per night. While the suite only includes two bedrooms, the space features high ceilings, a large meeting room, a personal gym, a baby grand piano and views overlooking Shanghai’s iconic waterfront, The Bund.

With such a hefty price tag, be assured that the stay also includes transportation in one of The Peninsula’s multiple Rolls-Royce Phantoms.

While, obviously, not all hotels will be to this level of luxury, the expense of the suite is perhaps indicative of the type of people who visit and indulge in the city. There are other expensive hospitality options available via the Peninsula Hotel in Shanghai as well.

If you want to go for a ride on The Peninsula’s yacht, it’ll cost about $2,000 an hour. The yacht can fit up to ten people and is used for lunches, evening river cruises and small corporate events. Tea, cookies and sandwiches are also provided during the ride.

Shanghai is the only location that The Peninsula has its own hotel-owned yacht.

Elsewhere, The Middle House, opened earlier this year, is part of the house collection of Swire Properties, with similar themed hotels in Hong Kong and Beijing. The hotel offers an elegant, upscale setting. A suite featuring spacious living room and your own private terrace can cost around $1,000 per night.

Information from TOPHOTELCONSTRUCTION shows that there are currently 45 projects in Shanghai’s pipeline, that once completed will yield a total of 11,566 rooms.

Of these 45 coming projects for Shanghai, the majority are due to open their doors in 2019. Numbers from the TOPHOTELCONSTRUCTION report show that 49 percent of the projects are due to open in that year, which adds up to 22 total properties. By comparison, 2018 is expected to see 7 more projects opening in the final quarter, while as of now 6 new projects are slated for 2020. This, however, will almost certainly change, with a slight bump taking

Let’s take a look at a few other projects currently underway in Shanghai:
