The continent accounts for half of all hotel development activity at Marriott International’s fun lifestyle brand, according to the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database.

Our researchers are currently tracking 74 separate Moxy-branded schemes with 14,003 rooms around the world, including a raft of exciting projects throughout Europe.

Marriott seizing opportunities across the pond

It’s interesting to see that Maryland-headquartered hospitality giant Marriott International is first and foremost looking across the Atlantic in its bid to grow Moxy’s footprint. Almost half of the brand’s current schemes (35 projects, 6,544 rooms) are located in Europe, way ahead of the comparable totals in North America (18 properties, 3,097 keys) and APAC (16 hotels, 3,277 rooms). There’s also a smattering of Moxy-related activity being planned in Latin America (four schemes, 765 keys) and the Middle East (one property, 320 rooms).

Despite Europe’s dominance on a region-by-region basis, however, it’s actually North America that provides the busiest single country overall. The US has 16 projects and 2,761 rooms in the works, just ahead of Germany (15 schemes, albeit with 2,808 keys), with Poland (six hotels, 999 rooms) rounding out the top three.

When will Moxy’s new hotels be ready?

We ought to stress that not all of these projects will be realised imminently – some are still several years away from opening their doors.

In total, 22 schemes with 4,336 rooms are due to launch this year, while an additional 16 hotels and 3,350 keys are likely to complete the following year. Things will be much quieter in 2024, when just six properties with 1,102 keys are scheduled to be ready, with a further 30 projects and 5,215 rooms not expected until 2025 or later.

Getting to know Moxy’s pipeline in more detail

For a project that neatly encapsulates the youth-oriented Moxy vibe, look no further than Moxy Bristol, a newbuild project due to open in March 2022. It’ll feature an open lobby where guests check in at the bar, as well as 214 rooms – each equipped with 42-inch ChromeCast TVs to allow travellers to binge-watch their favourite series in style – plus a 24/7 gym and a games zone. It’s being brought to life by a team that includes Vastint Hospitality, Cumming and Co Architects and Hotel Co 51.

Over in the Big Apple, meanwhile, Moxy Williamsburg is currently under construction with a view to launching in Q4 2022. Stonehill Taylor is handling the architectural design of this 11-storey newbuild in Brooklyn, with Basile Studio, Michaelis Boyd and Rockwell Group working on the interiors. Guests can expect to find 216 hotel rooms, a well-equipped fitness centre, a bar, a café-restaurant, a cocktail lounge, coworking spaces and two adjoining meeting spaces, all just a short walk away from the iconic Williamsburg Bridge.
