A look at the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database shows that the Marriott Hotels & Resorts brand will strengthen its international presence by completing 110 new schemes in the coming years, with a strong focus on the APAC region.

According to our research, Marriott Hotels & Resorts, one of Marriott International’s most high-profile brands, plans to add 110 hotels and 30,519 rooms to its global portfolio. We take a closer look at these upcoming launches.

Marriott hotel openings by year

In the last few months of 2020, Marriott will launch 14 hotels with 3,518 rooms. Seven of these projects are currently in the pre-opening phase.

For 2021, 45 openings with 11,647 keys are already in the works. Things will slow down a bit in 2022, with 23 planned openings and 7,735 keys. For 2023 and beyond, however, another 28 projects with 7,619 rooms are already in the pipeline.

APAC squarely in Marriott’s sights

APAC looks destined to be the fastest growing region for Marriott in the years ahead. The brand is planning to expand aggressively in this region, with 55 hotels and 14,495 keys currently under development here. North America takes second place with 31 projects and 10,775 rooms in the pipeline.

Nine new hotels with 2,101 keys are planned for Africa, while both the Middle East and Europe will get six hotels with 1,382 and 1,123 keys respectively. Latin America will be the slowest growing region for Marriott, with only three openings and 643 rooms.

Marriott’s fastest growing national hotel markets

Given its strong emphasis on the APAC region, perhaps it’s unsurprising that China leads the list of Marriott’s top three fastest growing national hotel markets – 47 hotels with 11,766 rooms are currently under development across the People’s Republic.

The US follows a distant second, with 25 properties and 1,459 rooms. And Saudi Arabia takes third place, courtesy of its three projects and 560 keys.

Marriott’s top new hotel projects

Apart from adding properties in established destinations, Marriott will also be growing its footprint in new markets.

The 160-room Courtyard by Marriott Batumi is one such project. Slated to open in early 2023, the hotel will be right on the coast of the Black Sea in Batumi, Georgia. The property’s proximity to the beach, as well as its large entertainment offering, promises to make the hotel a magnet for vacationers. Facilities will include a swimming pool, a spa, a fitness studio, a casino, restaurants and cafes, open terraces, a children’s entertainment centre, conference halls and a ballroom.

Set right on the beachfront and close to the presidential palace, diplomatic and government offices, meanwhile, the 202-key Cotonou Marriott Hotel in Benin is on track to become the ideal hotel for domestic and international business and government travellers. For conferences and social events, the Cotonou Marriott will offer 800 sq m of flexible function space; other amenities will include a private beach, an outdoor swimming pool, a health and leisure club, and tennis courts. As for entertainment and dining, the hotel’s five restaurants and lounges should provide guests with plenty of choice. The opening is pencilled in for early 2021.

Similarly, visitors will soon be able to combine business and leisure travel in the popular seaside destination of Split, Croatia. The 193-key Courtyard by Marriott Split will offer expansive meeting and events facilities as well as quick access to nearby beaches and entertainment. This hotel will be part of the two-tower Vrata Split development, which will also house offices and the headquarters of OTP Banka Hrvatska. The property is due to open its doors by summer 2021.

Lastly, and set in the heart of Houston’s thriving business district, Marriott Houston North will offer 390 rooms and vast meeting and events areas. The largest space, the Texas Ballroom, will boast 6,318 sq ft of function space and seat up to 700 guests. Other facilities will include the Eat Network restaurant, a fitness centre, convenience stores, a concierge lounge, a laundry room, a business centre and an indoor/outdoor pool. The opening date has not yet been confirmed.
