The TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database shows that IHG’s boutique brand Hotel Indigo is continuing to expand globally in these uncertain times, with a particular focus on the APAC market.

According to our researchers, Hotel Indigo will grow by 65 properties and 10,318 rooms in the coming years. We find out more about its future growth plans.

Steady growth projections

Hotel Indigo’s project pipeline will steadily add new properties to the brand’s portfolio in the next few years. For 2020, 17 launches are planned, of which eight are already in the pre-opening phase; they will collectively add 2,561 rooms to the mix.

In 2021, 19 properties will go live and bring 2,143 additional keys, while 13 more projects and 2,160 rooms are on the cards for 2022 already.

In 2023, things will slow down a bit – only four new hotels with 838 keys are currently planned for that year. For 2024 and beyond, 12 additional properties are in the works.

Hotel Indigo eyes up APAC opportunities

APAC leads the list when it comes to Hotel Indigo’s top growth regions with 31 hotels and 5,567 rooms in the pipeline. By way of comparison, Europe follows in a distant second place with just 17 properties and 2,030 keys on their way.

North America comes in third with 13 ongoing projects and 1,937 rooms, all of which will be in the US. And the Middle East and Latin America will grow more slowly, with three and one properties respectively.

Given the APAC region’s strong position, it’s hardly surprising that China heads up the list of Hotel Indigo’s top national growth markets. In the People’s Republic, 21 hotels with 3,985 rooms are currently under development.

Following the US, the UK is in third place with seven openings and 905 keys. Australia comes next with five new properties and 807 rooms, while Poland concludes the list with three more hotels and 300 rooms.

Hotel Indigo’s top cities for development fall along similar lines. Five of the top ten cities are in China – Hangzhou, Ningbo, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Jiuzhaigou – with each getting two new properties. Melbourne, New York and London will also see two openings each, while Dubai and Detroit will both get one new hotel.

Keep these Hotel Indigo projects in mind

Hotel Indigo Xiang Lake Hangzhou is the brand’s largest ongoing project with 325 rooms, our database reports. Opening in Q2 2021, it’s also one of the most eye-catching hotels currently under development in China. Set in the Xiang Lake Tourist Resort of Hangzhou, the property sits on the lake’s eastern bank and is surrounded by mountains, having been designed to blend in with the stunning landscape and offer guests panoramic views from both individual rooms and public areas.

Elsewhere, Hotel Indigo Auckland will be part of a mixed-use development in central Auckland. The opening date for this 225-room newbuild, which will rank among the city’s tallest buildings, is set for early 2021. Guests will be able to enjoy the all-day dining restaurant and bar, expansive meeting spaces and gym, or simply soak up some stunning views of the city and Auckland’s iconic harbour.

Moving on, the 283-key Hotel Indigo Dubai Downtown is in the up-and-coming Business Bay District, a large, master-planned, mixed-use community, which is only a stone’s throw from the world-renowned Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and emerging Design District. The property will feature an infinity-edged pool boasting views of the world’s tallest building, fitness centre, all-day dining restaurant, delicatessen, speciality restaurant and bar, as well as ample meeting space. The opening date is scheduled for November this year.

Finally, The Anchorage Hotel Indigo in Alaska will be in the heart of the downtown area of Anchorage. Featuring both apartment units and a hotel, this 178-key project is across the street from the ConocoPhillips headquarters, the main downtown convention centres and office towers. This stylish boutique hotel will benefit enormously from the inclusion of several ground-floor food, beverage and retail outlets.

According to the TOPHOTELCHAINS online database, 65 hotel projects are currently in Hotel Indigo’s pipeline:
