IHG’s Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts brand will keep expanding its global footprint, according to the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database, with a strong focus on the APAC region in particular.

Our researchers have found that Crowne Plaza will launch 55 new hotels, encompassing a total of 14,918 rooms, in the coming years. We find out more about these new openings.

Crowne Plaza openings by year

In the last few months of 2020, Crowne Plaza is clearly going all out on the development front, with 13 more openings and 3,323 rooms on the cards. Eight of them are already in the pre-opening phase.

In 2021, meanwhile, 16 hotels with 5,658 rooms are slated to go live, with 13 additional properties in the pipeline for 2022, and 13 more lined up for 2023 and beyond.

Top growth regions for Crowne Plaza

The APAC region takes a decisive lead when it comes to identifying where Crowne Plaza is concentrating its efforts, with 42 new hotels and 10,639 rooms on the horizon. Europe follows in a very distant second place with six hotels and 1,529 keys.

Five properties will launch in the Middle East, meanwhile, adding 2,363 rooms. And North America and Africa will each get one new hotel.

Unsurprisingly, China tops the country-by-country breakdown, with 30 new properties and 7,340 rooms earmarked. Poland and India share second place, with three hotels apiece incorporating 910 and 400 keys respectively, whereas the Northern Mariana Islands and the UAE will both get two additional hotels, with 948 and 876 rooms each.

The top five cities in terms of new openings will each get two extra properties. Garapan in the Northern Mariana Islands comes out on top with 948 rooms, followed by Dubai with 876. Wenzhou, Guangzhou and Zhengzhou in China complete the list with 420, 400 and 400 keys respectively.

Noteworthy projects in Crowne Plaza’s pipeline

The 367-room Crowne Plaza Kota Kinabalu Waterfront will be part of a mixed-use development amidst high-end residences and dining establishments with stunning views of the city’s waterfront. Its eight versatile meeting spaces, including a large ballroom for up to 600 people, should suit a variety of MICE needs. Guests will be able to avail themselves of the rooftop bar, the first of its kind in the city, other F&B facilities, an outdoor pool, a spa and a 24-hour fitness centre. The launch is planned for Q3 2021.

Switching our attention over to the Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc, Crowne Plaza Phu Quoc Starbay will deliver 300 rooms right on the beach from late 2020. Its variety of meeting and function spaces will make it ideal for hosting both business and leisure events. Perhaps the hotel’s star attraction is its romantic wedding chapel, which will present couples with the ideal setting for beachside nuptials. An all-day dining, beachside speciality restaurant called Surf Shack, a pool bar, a fitness centre, an outdoor pool, a spa and a kid’s club will complete this hotel’s offering.

Finally, Crowne Plaza Dubai Business Bay will be situated on the Business Bay Canal, near the Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Mall, as well as other developing commercial and residential communities. Apart from its 290 rooms and suites, the hotel will boast all-day dining options, plus a gym and an outdoor infinity pool. As a major draw for business bookers and travellers, Crowne Plaza Dubai Business Bay will include a ballroom too, as well as several meeting rooms to host conferences and events. The hotel is slated to open in early 2022.
