Boulder locations: Shanghai welcomes world’s first quarry hotel
The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland hotel opened inside a former quarry. It is a unique concept of a trend that hoteliers are looking for bold new locations.
In a formerly abandoned rock quarry roughly 20 miles southwest of the glitzy and affluent city of Shanghai, China, there is a brand new hotel with a difference.
The property, dubbed the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, is innovative and non-conventional. It’s located inside a quarry, making it the world’s very first quarry hotel following roughly a decade of construction, most of which took place underground.
For years, luxury hotels have jockeyed to be bigger and taller, offering their guests stunning aerial views of surrounding countrysides and cities. While the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland is the first to occupy space in an actual former quarry, it’s not the first of its kind to literally look down to find a novel location.
In fact, the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland could be considered part of an ongoing trend that sees hoteliers looking for bold new locations. The Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, for example, recently debuted an underwater suite at its own property.
Still, the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland is very much a unique concept on its own merits. Built largely into the side of the closed quarry, the Sheshan Mountain Range, the hotel features 336 rooms spread across 18 floors.
Of these floors, 16 are underground, with the bottom two floors being submerged within a 33-foot deep aquarium. Guests in those rooms have the pleasure of being able to watch fish swim by their windows, all with a 24/7 butler service available to cater to them — the guests, not the fish!
The hotel, which has been given the fun nickname of “the earthscraper,” essentially replaces top lofty penthouse views with the aquarium views. Other underground guests, meanwhile, the ones who don’t have aquarium views, will have balcony views with purpose-built waterfalls rolling down the quarry walls. The hotel will also feature a glass-bottomed walkway that will allow guests to explore the submerged areas further.
One more unique amenity is aimed at thrillseekers: bungee jumping and rock climbing within the quarry.
