Beautiful NH Collection hotel opens in former Venetian glassworks
by Lauren Jade Hill | 13 Dec 2021 | Design

Designed by H&A Associati, NH Collection Venezia Murano Villa celebrates the iconic city’s industrial heritage with the help of furnace-shaped windows and exposed brickwork.
The island of Murano’s reputation for producing exceptional glassware helped inform the design concept of this extraordinary hotel.
A historic transformation
The newly opened NH Collection Venezia Murano Villa hotel is now hosting guests within the former Fornace De Majo glassworks. Located on the island of Murano overlooking the Venetian Lagoon, this four-star property boasts a memorable design concept by H&A Associati.
Interestingly, the scheme preserves the complex of 12 pre-existing buildings and nods to the site’s past at every opportunity, from the furnace-shaped windows, original chimney and exposed bricks to the objects of art and glass production.
Several brands collaborated with H&A Associati to realise the vision for this redesigned space. For example, Artemide created a line of glass-metal lamps, Rubelli used Venetian fabrics for the upholstering featuring colours inspired by the lagoon, Zucchetti provided taps, Saba Italia and Calligaris supplied tables and chairs, and Technogym was responsible for the fitness equipment.
“NH Hotel Group has always been committed to protecting the historical and artistic heritage of the cities in which it is located, while enhancing the original appearance of the hotel buildings themselves,” said Hugo Rovira, managing director of Southern Europe and USA at NH Hotel Group. “In this case, with NH Collection Venezia Murano Villa, the goal was to let our guests breathe in the authentic atmosphere of the historic glassworks that once stood here from the moment of their arrival, and we worked with both the owners and the architects to realise a dream and restore value to the extraordinary character of the place.”
Overlooking the Venetian Lagoon
The heart of this 4,800 sq m space, stretching from the main entrance on Fondamenta Navagero to the other side overlooking the lagoon, is the central courtyard, which provides direct access to the suites and hotel restaurant.
The property’s 104 guestrooms and suites all come with exclusive furnishings and Murano glass objects, plus appealing amenities like rain-effect showers, flat-screen TVs, espresso coffee machines and Sleep Better Mattresses. And travellers can dine at the onsite lagoon-view restaurant, where the à la carte menu takes inspiration from local culinary traditions, or enjoy a drink at two bars, including one with its very own terrace.
Additional facilities within the property include a spa and a 24-hour gym, as well as five modular and adaptable meeting rooms collectively capable of hosting up to 130 people. Last but not least, NH Collection Venezia Murano Villa lies adjacent to Navagero Park, which is reserved exclusively for the hotel in the evenings, and benefits from a private traditional Venetian pier for convenient mooring.
