TOPHOTELPROJECTS International Sales Director C. List shares deep insights into the hotel construction pipeline in Asia Pacific with attendees at TOPHOTELWORLDTOUR Shanghai.

According to new stats released at the TOPHOTELWORLDTOUR event on December 5th in Shanghai, the Asia Pacific hotel construction pipeline accounts for over a third of new properties around the world.

TOPHOTELPROJECTS International Sales Director Caroline List revealed this and other interesting facts in her in-depth presentation about the global hotel market at the networking event held at the swanky Andaz Xintiandi Shanghai.

A promising global hotel pipeline

In her presentation, List highlighted the global pipeline of 6,314 projects and 1,402,225 new rooms. Asia Pacific is clearly the strongest market here with 2,163 planned projects and 522,553 rooms going to market in the coming years.

The Americas follow with 1,867 new projects, Europe comes next with 1,460 and the Middle East and Africa will see 556 and 268 launches respectively.

Few surprises in the global top 10

The fastest growing national hotel markets hold few surprises. The TOPHOTELCONSTRUCTION database shows that the United States and China still lead the pack with 1,347 and 1,047 new hotels each, followed by the UK, Germany and the UAE with 336, 331 and 174 new properties respectively.

While it might come as a surprise to some that Australia is in the top 10 with 171 projects, Saudi Arabia and India were expected to be on the list thanks to growing domestic and international arrivals. Indonesia and Thailand represent APAC’s still quickly developing tourism sector in the list of the world’s fastest growing hotel markets.

Big brands in the APAC hotel market

Within APAC, China is clearly the most dynamic market with 1,047 openings of which 405 will happen in 2020. Australia, India and Indonesia follow far behind with 171, 144 and 124 openings each.

What is also impressive is that of APAC’s top ten urban hotel markets, 7 are in China with Chengdu and Shanghai leading the pack.

The leading groups expanding across APAC include Marriott International, Hilton, the fastest growing group in China with 47 projects, and IHG. Brands experiencing the most rapid growth in this region are Hilton Hotels & Resorts, DoubleTree by Hilton and Sheraton Hotels & Resorts among others.

Apart from highlighting these key facts and figures, List also shared information about the market’s development and future outlook and summarised that the coming years are looking positive for hotels around the world.
