Alessi and Valerio Sommella launch ‘Bibo’ tea and coffee accessories
Alessi and Valerio Sommella put the hands together and propose two tea and coffee accessories sets in the ‘Bibo-line’. One is designed for professional use and the other for the home. The common thread is a small tray that in both cases accommodates two containers.
Valerio Sommella: “To explain this project, I need to start from the beginning, which may seem natural but not always necessary. Originally, Bibo was conceived as a café set; an object that could fill the space once occupied by the Alessi 50 and 55 sugar bowl, that could be used for sachets of sugar, but also for paper napkins, perhaps even a menu, therefore clearly designed for a public space and everything that entails.”
The designer works on small formal variations that denote different uses for the containers of the two sets. Minimalist, stylish objects with subtly soft shapes that are the result of precision-control of curved lines, a hallmark of the author’s designs. The set for bars and hotels features a napkin holder and a sugar sachet holder, while the set for household use has a biscuit tin and a sugar bowl with lid. Completing the tray is a central shaft with a ring at the top, for easy lifting of the object. Smooth and tactile, the ring can be used to pick up the object with just one finger, making the set easy and lightweight to move around.
All the products designed by Valerio Sommella are characterised by rounded shapes: “I love working with steel to enhance its three dimensionality. I love designing in 3D, and steel is a perfect material. Like the sea, it lives on light. It lives on reflections.”
