The inaugural AHEAD Americas Awards recently announced the winners of their hospitality design event, which brought together the leading figures in hotel design and development across the region to battle it out for some prestigious prizes in an array of categories. The event took place in Herzog & de Meuron’s Pérez Art Museum Miami on June 28th and many innovative and brilliant hotel designs were showcased over the course of the day. A panel of judges were asked to assess hotels and resorts completed between September 2015 and December 2016, and the Americas event was one of eight design events held by AHEAD that will culminate in a Global Biennale in 2018 where all of the winners of the regional events go head to head to decide a global winner in each of the particular categories. Some of the winners from the Americas event are as follows:
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Faena Miami took away five of the night’s awards, including some of the most coveted. Going away with the AHEAD Americas Hotel Design of the Year, the night’s big win, hotelier Alan Faena was also honoured with the Outstanding Contribution Award for his services to the hospitality industry. The Faena also won Best Resort Hotel and best Event Spaces for the Faena Forum, designed by renowned architecture firm OMA.
The 11 Howard in Manhattan, New York, was another big winner of the night, walking away with four prizes in Hotel Renovation and Restoration, Lobby and Public Spaces, Restaurant for Le Coucou and the award for Best Suite.
Some other notable winners were the Hotel Criol in Santiago de Querétaro, Mexico which won the Urban Hotel, Conversion award and got a special mention, and also the Arlo Hotel SoHo which got New Concept of the Year and Best Guestrooms.
