Transforming a private townhouse in Sapporo’s culturally rich Sosei East neighbourhood, Hotel Sosei Sapporo combines Japanese tradition with touches of modernity.
Drawing on the surroundings
As it takes over a former residence of the city’s pioneer district, the just-opened Hotel Sosei Sapporo is designed to reflect Japanese traditions, from its entrance featuring the ‘Wild Hops’ sculpture by local artist Rie Kawakami, to the integration of the hamanasu (Japanese rose) symbol throughout.
Referencing the city’s brewing tradition, and famous Sapporo beer, the hotel’s bar is set apart in its design by a fireplace drawing inspiration from ancient copper beer kilns. Hues of green and deep violet create a warm ambience.
Sapporo itself is scenically set between the mountains and sea. The city is said to be the second snowiest in the world and it was the location for the Winter Olympic Games in 1972. In winter, seasonal highlights include the city’s ice sculpture contest and in the warmer months, locals make the most of its many parks.
An immersion into the locale
The hotel houses 118 guest rooms, including the Hamanusu Suite, with soft lighting and large bouquets of flowers. Nature is also brought into the interior decor, with Japanese artworks representing the surroundings. Local influence in the amenities includes the use of bath salts made from hops.
Drawing on Sapporo’s legacy as the birthplace of Japanese beer, the hotel’s restaurant takes inspiration from old German breweries for its design, with the menu then highlighting local dishes such as ramen and grilled lamb, with fish sourced from the local market’s fish auction.
Experiences offered by the hotel in this area include a horse-drawn carriage ride providing insight into the Sosei East neighbourhood and a private tasting at the local beer museum.
Commenting on the opening, Tadashi Kitahara, hotel manager, said: “Hotel Sosei Sapporo – MGallery Collection invites you to discover the city’s rich cultural heritage. Welcome to your new home in downtown Sapporo, the perfect base to explore the magical beauty of the island of Hokkaido.”
