Accor moves Movenpick into Sicily

Accor is expanding its Italian portfolio by signing a new franchising contract with Mondello Palace Hotel Srl to reopen the property under the Movenpick brand.

Mondello Palace Hotel is a historic building, a landmark for the coastal district of Mondello on the island of Sicily, and it is located opposite the ancient bathing establishment known as ‘Charleston’.

Complete renovation

The hotel is currently closed for a complete renovation of the interior and exterior spaces, by Luigi Smecca Architects studio in Palermo.

Scheduled to open in Q3 2024, the property will feature 80 rooms – including 14 suites – an extensive conference area, a restaurant, bar, spa, two paddle courts and outdoor swimming pools with the exclusive style of the Movenpick brand.

Key destination

Ettore Cavallino, Accor’s senior director of development for Italy, Greece and Malta, said: “We are really proud of this franchise agreement with Mondello Palace Hotel srl to bring the Movenpick brand to the magnificent Mondello. Sicily is a key destination for national and international tourism and is therefore a development area in which we are very interested.

“We are confident that the resort vocation of the Movenpick brand, together with its holistic approach to sustainability and deep commitment to the environment and local communities will contribute to the international resonance of a historic hotel with a view to repositioning the Mondello destination.”

Great challenge

A Mondello Palace Hotel srl representative added: “We are thrilled to have started this initiative, which will be a great challenge for us both in terms of redeveloping the property and in the future with the management.

“The hotel will have countless facilities, including a spa and paddle courts, and our goal is to create an oasis within walking distance of the centre of Palermo. We are confident that with the cooperation of our technicians and the Movenpick brand, we will create a comfortable, exclusive and modern environment where our guests will be able to enjoy the local culture to the full.”

More Movenpicks

With the signing of Movenpick Mondello Palace, Accor is consolidating its presence in the Sicilian region, particularly in Palermo, bringing the number of group hotels in the Sicilian capital to four.

For the Movenpick brand, other upcoming European additions will include Movenpick Split Znjan Beach, a 156-key property arriving on the Croatian riviera in Q1 2025; in Montenegro, Movenpick Risan Teuta Resort, a 127-room site which will result from the repositioning of an existing historic hotel, will deliver in Q2 2025; and Movenpick Hotel & Resort Disentis will expand the line’s Swiss footprint in Q1 2026.
