A new Alessi adventure: “Extra Ordinary Metal” to restore the musical spirit of objects

The vital energy of a company with a strong creative dimension is found in the ongoing dialogue between designer and business. The exploration process that leads to the design of innovative products often wends its way down unexplored paths on the boundary between the Possible and the Impossible.

Alessi has also used this method in the sound project developed by Italian sound designer and composer Chiara Luzzana.

This is a challenge at the limits of the impossible to create a new way of expressing design research and further developing the emotional dimension of a concept.

Watch the soundtrack

The soundtrack “The EXTRA ORDINARY METAL” Orchestra by Chiara Luzzana is a extreme visual and sound fascination.

The birth of the idea

The idea of bringing out the sound of some design icons goes back to January 2017 and a meeting at the IN-possible Talk held at La Triennale di Milano as part of the Alessi IN-possible. Before an idea is brought to life” exhibition.

The result is the soundtrack that translates the transcendent and ethereal essence of the “Extra Ordinary Metal” project – a series of table accessories that represents a new interpretation of the metal surface through the use of brass, a material already used by Alessi in the 1920s and 30s – into a composition.

Old goldsmith’s technique wit a modern twist

The manufacturing tradition of the Alessi workshops is given a modern twist through the old goldsmith’s technique of Etruscan Granulation. In “Extra Ordinary Metal” the granulation, obtained through the cold milling of brass, is applied through a geometric sequence generated by the Fibonacci number. The result is a texture with a harmonious design that interacts with the light.

The development of the soundtrack began with all these elements. The composer remarks: “I create music using sounds captured from everyday life. Everything you can see, you can hear”. History, Design, Culture, Metamorphosis and Decoration are some of the concepts that we can discern though the sounds that Chiara Luzzana has extracted from the objects: trays, baskets, containers, fruit bowls.

The common thread that connects a design company’s creation process and the work of a sound artist is the uncertainty of the results that the exploration of unknown worlds will bring.

Challenging the impossible

“Extra Ordinary Metal a soundtrack by Chiara Luzzana” is a concrete example of what challenging the Impossible means for Alessi: the ability to transpose a metaproject – that is, a series of theoretical, cultural and emotional references – into a new language of communication.
