Scandic Grows in Germany

Having identified Germany as a key growth target, Scandic Hotels has signed another conversion property, this time in Freiburg

Scandic Hotels has added another German property to its growing portfolio in the country, signing to open Scandic Freiburg.

The southwestern German city, close to the borders with France and Switzerland, is attractive for its business community and as a university study hub. This resilient demand base makes a convincing hotel investment case, as Scandic looks to grow in the country. The 219 room property will open in autumn 2027, following a major refurbishment of all the interior.

A New Future for a Rebranded Novotel

The hotel recently changed hands, closing as the Novotel Freiburg am Konzerthaus and in the ownership of Deka Immobilien. In a deal reckoned at EUR28 million, the asset was acquired by Iremis, a Luxembourg-based investment group, with Scandic signing a new long term lease.

Currently, Scandic operates eight hotels in Germany, with two open in Berlin and Frankfurt, plus properties in Hamburg, Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart. The group has just opened Scandic Charlottenburg, a refurbished hotel in Berlin, and in early 2027 will add Scandic Frankfurt Messe. Standing next to Messe Frankfurt, this 296 room hotel is another rebranding, and is ideally placed to benefit from conference and trade fair business.

2027 will be a busy year of openings for the group, starting with Scandic Bassin Seven. This 342 room hotel overlooking Aarhus Bay will add to Scandic’s presence in Denmark. The Scandic Downtown Camper in Stockholm will also see the completion of a 28 room extension to the property, while Scandic Koping will launch, a conversion property that will operate under a franchise agreement.

Scandic is also following other hotel brands in building a presence across several sites in major German cities such as Hamburg. It will open Scandic Hamburg St. Georg StadtKontor in mid 2028, and will follow that with the addition of the 430 room Scandic Hamburg, opening in early 2030.

The group’s second brand, Scandic Go, is designed for travellers on a more modest budget, and is currently growing across the Nordics. The group recently opened Scandic Go Oulu, a 144 room property in the Finnish destination. Pipeline properties include Scandic Go Stockholm, opening in 2027 and followed by the launch of the 152 room Scandic Go Stavanger, launching in 2028.

Scandic Gets to Grips with Dalata

Following the sale of Dalata Hotel Group to Pandox, Scandic has also taken over the operations of the Dalata properties, under the Clayton and Maldron brands. Taking on this substantial additional scale also meant planning for Dalata’s pipeline growth, with two hotels due to open in 2027 and more in 2028.

The first of these is another converted Novotel property in Germany. A 274 room property in Berlin is currently undergoing refurbishment, ahead of a relaunch as Clayton Hotel Tiergarten in late 2026. Then, during the first half of 2027, attention will turn to the UK as the Clayton Hotel St Andrew Square launches, adding to Dalata’s presence in Edinburgh. Also adding to the inventory will be a major nine storey extension to the brand’s Manchester airport hotel.
